It was working on my pc windows 7 after I formated it to Fat32 as I was able to transfer files to and from it, showed up in My Computer window as drive e:, I then gave it to my dad for his PC windows 7, he said it worked as well for a few times as he was able to transfer files to it as well, then after he did that, it died and couldn't befound on his PC win7, he then pluged it into the DVD's USB 2.0 connection slot and it just didn't find it or show any files even after 2 hours letting it try, the little light flashes once or twice they it just stays on

My guess is then a component failure within the USB HD. I still think it's worth trying on a XP system, which, in my experience is the most tolerant of all the Window's releases, but it should immediately show up when you insert it into the USB port as 'New Hardware Found - installing drivers'.

Yeah I thought that as well, about new harddrive but device manager says its already got the lastest driver installed

Update
The WD HD seems to work with my new WD Live hub 1TB just thought I try plugging it in to the USB port and it showed up and I could use it OK, thought by magic it would work on my pc afterwards, nothing went back to no WD HD showing up,
Any idea why it worked on the WD Live, but not on PC

It may be a voltage problem from the USB port. USB ports are quite sensitive to voltage levels. Perhaps the plug or socket is poor on the cable or PC and the voltage contacts are not picking up properly. The USB hub may have better contact.

Now am trying to get the WD Live Hub 1TB to talk to my PC and see my files, using wireless conntection, real pain its asking for user name and password not sure for what I dont know any fun thou

I have a 6 month old Tosh laptop but when I switch it on, it attempts to fire up, then switches itself off almost immediately. Any suggestions of what I could try to remedy would be very welcome, before I take it back to the shop. I have tried the obvious like holding the button down (!), CTRL ALT DEL, etc. Thanks. Jennifer (clueless!)

Try taking the battery out, give it a clean and replace. Even if your on mains this could be a faulty connection. Or the fuse in the plug gone and battery run down.,.BB

On a PC this would indicate fan failure, but not sure if that's the same for a laptop.
Would hesitate to open up the case if still under warranty.

Thanks Harry. Still under warranty so I don't want to open it up. Took battery out but didn't work. Shall see if I can get through to Toshiba but it seems manic after the Bank Holiday when they were closed.

Does it have a CD drive in which you insert a bootable disk?
I am not sure where that would get you/us but there will be gurus around here who understand things like BIOS etc.
Presumably it would identify if your internal hard disk was working which is where your flash memory will need to look for booting instructions....but I waffle as I am already out of my depth.

The BIOS which boots up first will give you a beep code to indicate which component is at fault if it cannot complete it's boot up. The software (Windows, Linux etc) should then boot up after the BIOS. So, question is, does your laptop beep before it shuts down and if so what is the sequence (long or short beeps)? Then you will need to go to the BIOS manufacturer's website (American Megatrends etc) and have a look at the relevant beep code to identify the fault.

Thanks guys. No, I don't get as far as a beep. It gives a whirr, then a grunt..nothing opens on the screen. It does have a CD drive though. I am going to try and get through to Toshiba and shall report back. J

Whaen that has happened to me, it has been the PSU. Not that easy to fix on a laptop though. If it is in warranty then let them fix it.

As you have a CD drive you may also have a recovery disk from Toshiba - something to look for whilst waiting for the phone to be answered.

Yes, Toshiba call centre is the only place where they tell you how many minutes wait you have and it increases in length of time as you wait! Sending it back and it will take up to ten days.
The one thing they did make me try was to plug it in with the battery removed and then press and hold the power button for five seconds to see if that had any effect. It didn't.

I don't think you have any choice, as any parts (+ labour) they need to replace are going to be free to you. Only downside is that the postage is going to cost! Hope you kept the box & packaging??? Also hope you copied any important stuff to USB stick regularly????!!!

Ironically, Harry, I have the box for once but I am not to use that. Have to pack in something "more substantial", (their words) as going via UPS to Germany. No cost to me to send though and Courier picks up and delivers back. Important stuff to USB..ouch ;-) Guilty as charged!
