Jeff,

If you want to say what chart setup you're using for cable (timeframe and indicators), I'll try to help.

When I pasted up that chart for you last night, it occured to me that you might not be able to see it if Photobucket was blocked at your work. There are a couple of things in the chart which suggest that your trade was a bit dodgy. Firstly, the move was already 60 pips in (the entry signal came at around 1.9750) when you entered. Secondly, the range for the day was already pretty close to the average daily range, suggesting that the potential for further gains on the short side might be limited.

Notwithstanding, you were right imo to short it as it certainly wasn't a long at the time. The stoploss (stepped magenta line above the price) moved down to 1.9693 before being triggered last night. There had also been a signal to exit the short trade (for a small profit) prior to the stop being hit. Your loss on the trade should therefore have only been minimal.

Hils
Maybe I was looking for a trade to try to get back into looking at FX again. I set my stop at 1.973 and didnt change it. I guess I should wait until I have some better tools at my disposal before trying again. As I said, limited access to anything at work but hope to habve my laptop with me soon.

Thanks for the comments

Jeff,

Do yourself a favour and get re-registered and set back up for MT4. Aside from it being free, it's just so much better than any web based charts that increasingly rely upon Java. There are indicators galore (far more powerful and sophisticated than the web based indicators) that can be downloaded for MT4 to do absolutely anything.

Once you've re-installed it, let me know and I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

Will do, thanks Hils

johngtudor - 09 Jul 2008 11:24 - 9925 of 11056

Hils,

I note your recent chart posting to Jeff....and was particularly impressed with the rhs legends and other stuff..arrows etc. Is that the result of all your recent hard work coding? If so, well done and is it generally available as I would like to add it to my MT4 package. Thanks in advance. JT

hilary - 09 Jul 2008 11:37 - 9926 of 11056

John,

I've basically taken indicators that are freely available, thought how I could use them better to suit my style, and then re-coded them (it sounds flash, but it's more cut'n'paste than ace coding) to suit.

The trend indicator is the culmination of many weeks and months researching and hard graft. My current project is to get an EA coded professionally based around what you can see on that chart. If I can get it to work, it is my intention to get it to automatically trade multiple instruments for me so that I can say goodbye and walk away. It's my estimation that I'm a month or two away from that, so I'm understandably quite excited.

johngtudor - 09 Jul 2008 13:32 - 9927 of 11056

Hils,

Wonderful, although without wanting to 'dampen' your enthusiasm I suspect walking away could be a little too ambitious. Fyi I am running some automation software, but things like the broadband going down, and Newsy stuff on certain days, tends to screw with your life. Nevertheless please keep us all posted on your endeavors. Great that your attempting this. Best, John

hilary - 09 Jul 2008 14:09 - 9928 of 11056

Funnily enough, John, the prospect of waking up in the morning to a train crash is my biggest concern. But then I think "Hey, isn't that what the stops are for?"

Besides, I wouldn't walk away completely. I'd still look in frequently to check that it was working. I can also envisage that a major hardware upgrade would be on the cards.

All of this may be jumping the gun though. Firstly, I've read that coding projects have a habit of over-running by a factor of between 2 and 5. Secondly, even if the coder delivers, I'm still not 100% sure that my system is flawless and profitable.

It may all turn out to be a major embarassment!

Treblewide - 09 Jul 2008 14:24 - 9929 of 11056

joh/hils...there is free software out there that will monitor your automated systems for instance i have a monitor running from another location (my mates house!) that pings my autmated set up constantly...if for whatever reason the internet connection dies it will text me straight away or you can even set ip up to call your land line.

also if my broker looses connection from routing software or chart packag looses its feed I am instantly notified and if I am not in the house you can connect via XDA

i have been doing this stuff for a long time and it is no longer difficult or expensive

there is no need in this day and age to be sat at a screen.

if you need info on any of it let me know, as i say it is all FOC

hilary - 09 Jul 2008 15:51 - 9930 of 11056

That set up sounds terrific, Treble. I did a quick bit of Googling, but nothing immediately stood out.

Does your software have a name per chance?

Treblewide - 09 Jul 2008 16:26 - 9931 of 11056

hils.....will drop you a note later...heading out to the gym right now...if you get nowt by tomorrow MAM mail me as i have shit for brains

Treblewide - 09 Jul 2008 16:36 - 9932 of 11056

very quickly

http://www.nullsoft.com/free/netmon/

have a look at above...you need to sign up for a text alert account (there are loads) and you need to embed a line of code into the source of the utility above that will be supplied.

email me and i will send more detailed repsonse later.

peace

hilary - 10 Jul 2008 08:11 - 9933 of 11056

Thanks for that, Treble. I can now see how that would be a starting point and it's certainly sown some seeds.

I'll be in touch again if and when I can get this up and running.

We are just about start writing to a new GTIS feed which will have streaming spot, forward and outright forward rates for the following pairs. We will stream all of them on one page, what other tools would be useful as we now have the data? Sensible suggestions please Delboy and Daisy!

As you've got a SEK feed, Doris, the Dollar Index (USDX) would be useful imo.

USDX = 50.14348112 EURUSD^(-0.576) USDJPY^(0.136) GBPUSD^(-0.119) USDCAD^(0.091) USDSEK^(0.042) USDCHF^(0.036)
