Recently floated on AIM, EROS looks set for fast growth in 2007. EROS buys the rights for the distribution of Bollywood movies in all formats (cinema, DVD, television etc.) usually for a cash lump sum on completion of the movie with no commission payable to the producer and also usually alongside the right of first refusal when the contract is up. This business model is high-margin (58.3%) and provides a steady income stream. Bollywood films are becoming increasing popular internationally and this is coupled with the embryonic state of the Indian cinema industry (there are only 12,000 screens for a population of over 1 billion and 90,000 screens are expected to be installed within the next 5 years). Profits for this financial year are expected to climb 61% to $32.4 million. EROS also benefits from being registered in the tax haven of the Isle of Man.

Eros International's hit Salaam-E-Ishq grosses over USD 11 million across 1200
screens worldwide in opening weekend
Monday, January 29 2007: Eros International's latest Bollywood star-studded
extravaganza, Salaam-E-Ishq, which was released worldwide on January 25th on an
impressive 1200 screens, has become a runaway box office success grossing over
USD 11 m in just its opening weekend. In the UK, the box office grosses up to
Sunday exceeded that of Adlabs's Krishh and Guru as well as UTV's Rang De
Basanti and Don for the same period.
With over 3.1 billion tickets being sold in India every year and the accelerated
growth in multiplex cinemas which are driving ticket prices up, Bollywood is
well and truly sustaining its 21% CAGR growth. As part of its strategy, Eros is
taking a larger slice of the Indian box office and has set up its own
distribution offices in Mumbai and Delhi.
In line with Eros's strategy to broaden the audience for Bollywood films beyond
the expatriate community, Salaam-E-Ishq was released with local language
subtitles in markets like Germany, Belgium and Holland through mainstream
multiplex chains.
Sunil Lulla, Director and President India, Eros International Plc said: 'We are
delighted with the audience response to Salaam-E-Ishq. Our strategy is a
combination of leveraging our distribution network and marketing muscle globally
and looking for opportunities to open new markets. We remain focused on this
core thread of our business and are excited about our release pipeline'.
After the success of Omkara and Salaam-E-Ishq, Eros's global release pipeline up
to March 2007 includes Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya, Vipul Shah's Namastey
London, Amitabh starrer Chinni Kum and Aishwarya Rai's Provoked.

Just thought I'd join you here, Chad.
Indian films are regularly in the top ten uk films.A big Bollywood blockbuster costs around 6m. Uk takings of a hit film can be upwards of 1m (the biggest raked in over 2m in 2001). I know Eros are getting into production and have music rights (another big field). With the number of satellite channels now, there is a demand for their catalogue. The business is sound. whether the market will recognise it is another question. At the end of the day, the figures will speak for themseleves.

Indian films these days are getting a wider audience, nearly all are subtitled. Subject matter is also moving away from the usual romance. Eklavya was a recent release. It has shades of a Shakespeare tragedy, beautifully shot and great performances- an award winning film. Box office has not been too great in India but doing ok here.
