Anyone downloaded XP SP2 Yet? Im in the process of doing so. 1 hr 15 on DSL!

I AM TRYING TO ADD A ADSL MODEM TO MY LAPTOP RUNING WINDOWS XP HOME
DO I EVEN NEED ONE CAN ANY-ONE HELP ME

If your laptop is your only computer then you could get away with a USB modem but if you have or may have in the future another computer that you also want to connect to then get an ADSL router.

Let us know in more detail what kit you have and what you want to do.

Iain, that link is for gibson research and Steve Gibson has produced some very fine utilities over the years however the shoot the messenger thing stops the windows messenger service not the MSN messenger. You may well know that but the use of the word messenger is a bit confusing.

I would not worry too much about the messenger service it is sometimes used by Windows to give you system messages and can be very useful on a LAN with several computers. The new firewall in SP2 should block messenger messages from the internet but you may need to tweak the settings. Leave it enabled unless you are getting unwanted popups.

I have just installed SP2 and so far so good. The firewall is a lot better but as it is either on or off on all connections. If you are using a LAN you may have to tweak the settings. They have made some changes to IE6 which now has a popup blocker and feels faster. Windows media player 9 is also installed.

Noticed it does seem a lot faster.

i have hit a wrong button by mistake and me task bar that is normally down the bottom is on the top of the page:-( how can i get it down to the bottom again please????

i have been using the D-Link DI-604 ethernet router,
it has an inbuilt firewall but i have no software for it,all what was on the CD what come with it was the manual,
should i have some kind of software or dont i need to set up the firewall,

scussy, the firewall will be running in the firmware inside the router. I don't know this particular router but normally you would type the address of your router into a browser (e.g. http://192.168.0.1 ), log in to the router and set up the firewall. Should be covered in the manual :-)) It will be worth however checking the manufacturer's website for a new version of the firmware before you start.

scussy, k has already answered this and I put some more in the other thread. You may well find that the firewall is on by default .http://www.adslguide.org is normally a good site to check for info on particular routers
