Don't think about reformating your drive.

Did you do the scan in safe mode?

Have you any more details on the virus? I couldn't find anything on the file that you listed.

stockbunny - 11 Jan 2005 19:02 - 2902 of 11003

Yes Optimistic I did the scan in safe mode, but it still couldn't do
anything with it. The file appears to be in c:\\windows\system32\export
that's where it showed up in the virus scan in safe mode but in the
other file - or sub-file - in normal mode.

To start with, when in safemode, open Windows Explorer, Navigate to the folder where the file is and try to rename it.

You may have to enable viewing of hidden and operating system files (In windows explorer Tools/Folder Options then the View Tab).

Once youve renamed it and made sure that everhything works and the computer is clean, then you can delete it.

stockbunny - 11 Jan 2005 19:25 - 2904 of 11003

Optimist - by the way thanks, you've been a hero today :>)
OK I know some things aren't allowed in renaming files,
so I presume I have to put c:\\windows\system32\
but instead of the existing FScET.dll can I put newbie instead?
does it need the .dll at the end?
Sorry I really am a techo-twit...

Optimist - 11 Jan 2005 19:44 - 2905 of 11003

The c:\windows\system32\ is the directory or folder that the file is in. The filename is FScET.dll it doesn't matter what you rename it to but I suggest "orig_FScET.dl_". This is good practise should you need to put things back.

Are you comfortable using Windows Explorer?

stockbunny - 11 Jan 2005 19:47 - 2906 of 11003

I think so I'll go have a look at it now - think I've been
in there before - obviously I wont do anything yet, just have
a look about.

Optimist - 11 Jan 2005 19:55 - 2907 of 11003

I just thought, you need to be logged on as an Administrator to get into c:\windows\system32\

Any problems, PM me your phone number and I'll talk you through it.

stockbunny - 11 Jan 2005 19:58 - 2908 of 11003

Thanks - hopefully I wont need to bother you, but you never
know, if I need to I'll email via the BB as you've suggested.
Thanks again.

Just thinking about buying a couple of copies of Norton Internet Security (on e-bay as it's a heck of lot cheaper) but I can't find out if NIS supports Mozilla Firefox. Does anyuone know? This is what Symantec say:

REQUIRED FOR ALL INSTALLATIONS
70-100 MB available hard disk space (200 for complete installation, including Norton Parental Control)
Text Bullet DVD or CD drive
Text Bullet Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 browser or later

Email scanning supported for standard POP3 and SMTP-compatible email clients.

Private information blocking supports:
AOL Instant Messenger 4.3 and later
MSN Messenger 4.6, 4.7, 6.0, and later (MSN 5.0 is not supported)
Windows Messenger 4.7 and later
Standard POP3 and SMTP-compatible email clients
Standard Web browsers

Supported instant messaging clients for virus scanning:
AOL Instant Messenger 4.7 and later
Yahoo! Instant Messenger 5.0 and later
MSN Messenger 4.6, 4.7, 6.0, and later (MSN 5.0 is not supported)
Windows Messenger 4.7 and later
Email scanning supported for standard POP3 and SMTP-compatible email clients.

I use Norton AV but not Norton Internet security. So far as I can tell, it does most of it's work at the IP level so it should not make too much difference what browser you use. The exception may be with add blocking.

If you haven't got one already you may be better off getting an ADSL router with a proper firewall.

Seymour Clearly - 11 Jan 2005 22:00 - 2912 of 11003

Got one anyway thanks Optimist, might just stick with AVG, but I have my doubts about how efficient it is compared with NAV. I think I'll download all the adaware etc stuff instead. Have been running NIS on my laptop but sub just expired. However, not using that for emails any more.

(Cue Fx: Everyone throws hands up in horror at the thought that I'm running without blockers)!!

Thanks for your help.

Can anyone offer any advice on buying XP Pro for a new PC without an operating system

On E-bay I could buy an OEM version for about 50 or an Academic upgrade (I have Windows 98 on an old PC) for about 65

Many thanks

DocProc - 13 Jan 2005 13:50 - 2916 of 11003

Here's an eBay seller of XP Pro' who looks OK to me:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41888&item=7126787815&rd=1

eBay say:-

Follow this checklist and you'll be prepared to make a smart, safe purchase on eBay.

Learn all you can about the item. Read the item description carefully. Do you understand all the details about shipping, insurance, payment options and so on? Avoid making assumptions about details that aren't included. If the seller has any Buyer requirements that you don't meet, you can contact the seller for permission prior to placing a bid or using the "Buy It Now" feature.

Check the seller's feedback. From the item page, click on the number in parentheses after the seller's User ID. From here you'll see what other buyers have had to say about doing business with the seller.

Ask the seller questions. If you have any questions or are unsure about any aspect of the item, contact the seller by clicking on their User ID or the "ask seller a question" link on the item-listing page. Common questions include "Do you accept returns?" and "How do you ship the item?" If you have bid on an item and are having a problem communicating with a seller through email, you can request their contact information (including a phone number).

Make sure the item is legal and allowed. If you have any doubts as to whether the item you're interested in is allowed, check eBay's policies on prohibited, questionable and infringing items.

Optimist - 13 Jan 2005 13:58 - 2917 of 11003

I use OEM versions of XP Pro with no problems but so far as I know, you can't use it to upgrade from another OS. This does not matter to me as XP is always best installed on a new disc but you would have to reinstall all of your programs and data.

The OEM versions are not supported directly by Microsoft and if you buy off Ebay then make sure that you get a genuine and unique license key.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, I've been asked by my grandson to help build his web site, bearing in mind all this web stuff is totally alien to me, what I now need is a decient HTML editor and it has to be idiot proof, been recommended CoffeeCup or is there a better/easier one?

Many thanks

Optimist - 13 Jan 2005 15:40 - 2919 of 11003

Prodman

It really depends on how complex you want the site to be.

If you want to produce a couple of simple web pages, then you could set them out in Word and Save As an htm file. But as you get more complex you will rapidly wish that you were using something better.

Microsoft Front page is reckoned to be easy to use and capable of good results, but there are many more options out there.

Does your ISP provide any utilities for building web sites?
