Many thanks. Managed to download Shockwave without any problem but I can't for the life of me get hold of Flash.

Each time I click on Install it tells me to click on the gold bar at the top of the screen. For some reason I don't get it when trying to install Flash though I did get the gold bar when installing Shockwave. Damn mystery to me.

I've amended the security settings in IE as per the instructions on the Macromedia website too. Seems to be something to do with Active X whatever that is.

Unless you have any other suggestions I'll just keep trying everything.

Phew. I think everything's hunky dory now. I was logged on as admin but still couldn't 'see' any of the individual files even though though I had clicked on 'show hidden files'. Eventually I set up a system restore point and asked windows to delete the recycler folder with the virus in it. It deleted all files but kept asking me about the system files before deletion. I replied no to all. At the end it said that it couldn't delete the folder because there were still some files in it. Ran anti virus on the folder and no problems. Folder now contains only 200 files. Now going to get a beer or two.
I wonder what the folder/files are there for??????? I suspect it's something to do with my V-Com Fix It utility.
PS V-Com were of no help.

It's actually a faintly yellow bar which appears beneath the address bar to explain there is a problem when trying to download. By clicking it, it allows the download to take place. It's similar to the bar which appears explaining how to temporarily remove the pop up blocker (only that's in blue). Sorry, it all sounds very confusing I know.

I have rebooted without success.

I'll keep trying.

Why do you think you have blown the sound card?

I use a Tosh Satelite Pro and I remember that after SP1, I had to get hold of the latest drivers to make the sound card work. Which drivers are you trying to install?

Optimist - Haven't looked at this for a while cos I gave up on it... ;-)

In Device Manager, if I look at Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, it shows no devices present and is all blanked out. If I look at the hardware tab, it shows devices present and working properly.

Edit: It seems I do not have a Multi-Media Audio Controller installed. Where do I get one of those from.....?

I suggest that you start by looking on the Toshiba site for the latest drivers.

Once you have them, uninstall the sound card from device manager, and then scam for new hardware. With any luck, the card will be re-found and you will be able to install the latest drivers.

Your model may well be different from mine, but I had trouble with my sound using Win XP and some MS updates, hence the need for the latest drivers.

A friend of mine has a HP Athlon 1500 latop that when trying to boot up comes up with the error: AMD ATHLON CHECKING NVRAM. he took to a computer shop and they recommended changing the graphics card - he has now fitted this and still gets the same error.

Can any of you tell me what this error means and what may the likely cause/remedy?

I've been trying to get my pc to run in safe mode by pressing F8 when restarting, having disabled 'system restore' in order to do a scan/clean - but it ain't working. Where else do I find safe mode please? WIndows ME - but not for much longer :S

Edit: Think I'm in big T too - when I realised I couldn't find safe mode I tried to re-enable the system restore setting - 4 times now - and it's still disabled.

Phew! Dunno how, but re-enabled again now.

Ok - did a trend micro scan earlier which recommended the system restore/safe mode thingie before I re-scanned the machine for a trojan 194.A lurking in file C:\explorer.cab*explorer.exe*.

Users running Windows ME and XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected systems.

Windows Millennium Edition (ME) and Windows XP have a feature known as System Restore, which creates backups of certain files in the _Restore folder. The System Restore feature usually backs up files with EXE or COM extensions, which may include infected files and malware programs. Files in the _Restore folder are protected and can only be accessed using System Restore. This feature must be disabled first before Trend Micro antivirus can access and clean these files.

The following procedure disables the System Restore feature:

For Windows ME

Right-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click Properties.
Click the Performance tab.
Click the File System button.
Click the Troubleshooting tab.
Select Disable System Restore.
Click Apply > Close > Close.
When prompted to restart, click Yes.
Press F8 while the system restarts.
Choose Safe Mode then hit the Enter key.
After your system has restarted, continue with the scan/clean process. Files under the _Restore folder can now be deleted.
Re-enable System Restore by clearing Disable System Restore and restarting your system normally."


Well I can't do that - safe mode won't let me connect to the internet.

I'm trying to print a screen shot to the clipboard but I can't find it????

You don't need to access the clipboard necessarily Harlosh, just open any graphics program (even Paint) and paste.
