THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Labour say they will stop nom doms. The BBC is gleefully showing an interview with Ed Balls from two months ago. He says that there is no point in stopping it as it is unlikely to raise any money and would most probably cost the UK money.

Fred1new - 08 Apr 2015 15:28 - 58422 of 81564

Another few questions:

Does Eire count as overseas for non-doms?

Do trusts set up in Eire benefit from ngn-dom arrangements?

Does Gideon gain from such benefits?.

cynic - 08 Apr 2015 15:30 - 58423 of 81564

but it'll sound good at the hustings for it will please joe soap greatly .... and then it can be conveniently forgotten should labour actually have to formulate a budget

cynic - 08 Apr 2015 15:32 - 58424 of 81564

trusts are trusts and the sponsor cannot interfere with their running
trusts also have to be run for the benefit of the ultimate beneficiary
but you knew all that anyway - or didn't you know you didn't know? :-)

Fred1new - 08 Apr 2015 15:37 - 58425 of 81564

Haze, perhaps again you are missing the principles of the tax avoidance.

Also, if living in the UK with such "arrangements" the practitioners are using the UK and facilities to enable them to do so!

-=-=-=-=-=

But like the "basic wage" and other changes and the tory claims that there would be exit of jobs and the wealthy, it didn't happen.

Anyone else on here like figs?

Did you know that every fig has a decomposed DEAD WASP stuck inside it?

Figs are technically inverted flowers that store their pollen inside the fruits. As the female wasp slides through the narrow passage in the fig, her wings are ripped off and while she is unsuccessful in laying her eggs, she successfully pollinates the female flower. The now flightless female wasp dies inside the fig, where special enzymes break down her carcass into protein.

The fig basically digests the dead insect, making it part of the resulting ripened fruit. The special relationship, which biologists call an "obligate mutualism", has taken place unchanged for the past 34 million years.

There are 900 species of fig wasps, and each is responsible for pollinating one or two species of fig plant. Although neither the fig tree nor the wasp could reproduce without this deadly cycle, knowing vegetarians and vegans still rule the fruit out of their diet. In some countries, the consumption of insects is a common practice, since they're an excellent source of affordable protein. However some people aren't quite ready to tuck into critters for their lunch.

I will now have a go at putting you off ketchup, canned mushrooms and spinach salad.....

Ketchup is required to contain ‘no more than 30 fruit flies per 100grams'.
Canned mushrooms contain maggots. They just can't keep 'em out!
There is virtually bound to be at least the odd caterpillar in your spinach salad.

We have been invaded!

Giant Spanish slugs, which grow to six inches long, are immune to poison and are thriving following recent mild winters, are believed to have landed in the UK - most possibly coming in on imported salad and plants. They have spread from the Kent coast and slithered as far as London and East Anglia.

These voracious light brown predators eat beetles, snails, slugs and dog waste, as well as dead animals and crops.

Expert Dr Ian Bedford said: “We must kill them as they reproduce so rapidly. They make so much slime, they have no predators. An infestation will be devastating.”

He explained, that a single slug has sex with itself and can cause an infestation as it produces and fertilises 400 of its own eggs a year, twice that of UK varieties.

Here's what they look like:

The best way to kill them, is to drown them in a bucket of soapy water. They have an extra layer of slime and so squashing them underfoot, although killing them, creates yet another problem. Don't just bung them down the loo as they are highly likely to survive the journey to the sewage works and climb out the other end.

I find that comment from Fallon on back stabbing is interesting, especially when coming from a party famous for backstabbing and having a cabinet, which almost to a man, stabbed "Maggie" in the back as a PM, and then scrambling for her job.

Laughable.

Election 2015: Why David Cameron will remain as prime minister

The arithmetic suggests Cameron will still be at Number 10 after the election
We now have only four weeks to go until the election. Last time, I noted that I expect David Cameron to still be prime minister come 9 May, and today I’m going to explain to you why. It’s a simple matter of electoral arithmetic.

Take the latest odds, which come following the seven-way leadership debate. The ‘spread’ on seats has hardened to 284-88 (Tory) and softened to 269-73 (Labour). The SNP are marginally better (41-43), Ukip are unchanged (5-7), but the LibDems have weakened notably (23-25).

Bookies report that the expected weight of money is yet to come: not much of a ‘surge’ has been seen so far.

To win a majority, a government or coalition needs to take 323 of the 650 seats (I’m excluding Sinn Fein, who are expected to win six seats, but don’t take them up or vote). Also, the incumbent prime minister has the first shot at forming government, which could be a very significant advantage.

So at the current offer prices (ie the higher of the two figures in the spread), you’d have the Tories and the LibDems on 313. If they then throw in their lot with Ukip and the DUP, who are expected to win 14 seats between them, you’d have a majority of 327.

On the other side, you’d have Labour plus the SNP on 316. If the DUP join their coalition, that would make it up to 323. But Miliband has ruled out a coalition with the SNP, as have the LibDems.

So in all, it still looks as though a Conservative-led coalition is the more likely outcome.

As it is, I also expect the Conservatives to win more seats than the bookies are pricing in at the moment – primarily due to the big shift in Scotland. Come the big day, here’s how I expect the results to pan out.

Party .........Total seats.......Seats in Scotland
Tories 302 7
Labour 248 7
SNP 40 40
LibDem 31 5
DUP 7 0
Sinn Fein* 6 0
SDLP 3 0
Independent 2 0
Plaid Cymru 4 0
Alliance 1 0
Green 0 0
Respect 1 0
Speaker 1 0
UKIP 4 0
TOTAL 650 59
*Sinn Fein don’t take up their seats or vote

Under this scenario, Tories and the LibDems remain in coalition, with 302 seats and 31 respectively – a comfortable majority at 333. Although if necessary, they can add in Ukip and the DUP for another 11 seats, taking them to 344.

A Miliband-led opposition, composed of Labour (on 248 seats) and the SNP (on 40), would have 288 seats between them. Even if you add in SDLP, Plaid Cymru and others, that’s still only another 11 seats, for 299 (remember the Speaker and Sinn Fein do not use their votes).

So if the voting goes the way I expect it to, then only Cameron can form a government, even although it’s likely to be in coalition with the LibDems again. In no way can Miliband command a majority.

UK oil producers are celebrating what they are calling the biggest onshore oil discovery in the last 30 years in the land near Gatwick Airport.

An exploration firm (UKOG) has confirmed the land under Horse Hill near Gatwick could contain 158 million barrels of oil per square mile – up to 100 billion barrels in total. The firm is hoping it could meet between 10 per cent and 30 per cent of UK demand for oil by 2030.

"The arithmetic suggests Cameron will still be at Number 10 after the election"

I suggest that Dodgy Dave will twist, turn and try to bribe the lib/dem for a few days, but the tories, their policies and leadership are too toxic for others to support , and then he will scuttle out through the back door.

Of course this does not include the KIPPERS, BNP and Monster Loony party.
It interests me the crudity of smearing that Cameron is endorsing.

It would suggest that Cameron is frightened, and grasping at any straws he can think of.

It strikes me that the public in general is finding that how and what the tories represent more and more distasteful.
