ENGINEERING design and management consultancy Hyder Consulting has turned in yet another good set of numbers for the half to September.
Savvy chief executive Tim Wade unveiled 27% sales growth to 80.9m, with profits powering up 120% to 2.6m. Earnings per share were lifted 98% to 7.25p.
Wade said the half-time order book stood at 218m, 18% up on last March's figure at the year-end. The group's major markets were robust, according to Wade, who said the 2012 Olympics in London should boost the engineering consulting sector in the South East over the next few years.
Hyder continues to drive up margins by boosting the volume of fees put through its fixed cost base, and investing in higher margin work in design and advisory services.
During the half, Hyder acquired Queensland-based property and leisure consultancy Weathered Howe and October saw Hyder complete two further Australian acquisitions covering environmental services and transport planning.
Regionally, there was a rise in operating profits from 1.6m to 2.5m in the UK and Europe, Germany proved disappointing ahead of the election, and property sector strength drove Middle East turnover north from 10.7m to 15.9m.
Revenues in Asia Pacific, where Hong Kong made a small loss, rose strongly from 14.5m to 20.4m thanks to bumper growth in Australia.
For the year, analysts predict pre-tax profits of 6.3m and earnings per sahre of 17.9p, placing Hyder's shares at 260.5p on an reasonable forward price/earning ratio of 14.6.
Recommendation: Buy.

Ashamed to admit it, Bob, but I know almost nothing about this company!! I have doen no research at all and I am only in because a close friend of mine gave me a nudge, nudge, wink, wink tip when they were about 180.
He would tell me no more, just smiled and said, get in!!
I figured, what the hell, and took the gamble.
Guess I owe him a drink.

Yeah, I met a guy in Abu Dhabi in late 2001 who flagged up the concept even then of getting into this particular arena. Not so much HYC, but did mention one or two names that I didn't know, who are now heavily involved in HYC. I didn't even realise they connection until after I had sunk some money into them.
Tell me, Bob. Are HYC involved in a major desalination plant in the UAE or an embryonic Hydrogeneration project, because the same conversation that the names cropped up in was mainly about this American guy putting about 2million into a project along those lines, and after 5 years I might be able to make sense of what he was telling me.

Methinks there may be a bit of strategic hand strengthening going on to benefit from the London Olympics.
Buying a company that specialises in town planning and traffic management in the south east?
