HI Guys :>)
OK got a pest on the system a Dialer.Generic according to Norton which it doesn't seem to be able to remove, odd thing is according to scan its high risk but checking it on Nortons site its classified as low risk - slight inconsistancy there! Norton isn't zapping it, downloaded and ran AVG which didn't even pick it up. Seems to be lodged in a programe file onlineservices BT but can't track it down via search option on computer. Gone into windows explorer found online services BT in programe files but still no sign of this thing - any thoughts? Cheers

Optimist - 25 Sep 2007 10:37 - 6104 of 11003

My initial thought is - Don't let a BT progam anywhere near your computer.

If you are using aa ADSL/firewall/router then you should not need any ISP software on your computer and in my experience the main reason they ask you to install it is to get some commercial leverage over you.

Having said that, it is probaly almost harmless though I'd report it to BT and get at least one more opinion from an AV provider.

I've got a problem with my scanner. It's an Epson Stylus Dx3800 although I don't think it matters what the machine is. When I scan an image, I do a preview which is OK, then do the scan, and I get a message:

EPSON JPEG PLUG IN
Unable to write to file

Does anyone know how to clear this problem? I've uninstalled all the s/w and re-installed from the web, then uninstalled and re-installed from the original disc, and the same message is displayed. It may be something to do with the settings, but I'm completely stumped now.

I don't know if this has been covered elsewhere but I am constantly getting IE7 problems - effectively it just stops working and not responding so I have to close and re-open. I have recently upgraded my PC and moved to Vista (despite all the negative comments I have read on the BB) - but it also used to happen when I was running XP on my other machine. I've got all the updates from Windows so that doesn't seem to have an effect.

Anyone know of any good fixes (and yes, I know, I should run Mozilla Firefox - but that gave me problems on XP as well.) Maybe it's something to do with my set up???

PS - it took me a couple of go's at posting this because IE froze on me whilst typing. But it is intermittent so it'll probably be OK for a couple of days now - but never mind, anyone with any ideas I'd be very grateful. TIA.

chocolat - 25 Sep 2007 11:23 - 6108 of 11003

Same thing happens to me too - also a Vista.
Wondering if it's a flash problem, not that I understand these things.

Seymour Clearly - 25 Sep 2007 11:25 - 6109 of 11003

mg, not any help to you but I occasionally use IE7 rather than Firefox on XP home, and it very regularly crashes on me (pretty well every time), whereas Firefox is as stable as anything, and if it does crash, when you re-open it it remembers where you were and will restore your session. Handy.

So that would be my fix :-)

edit, I think it's a flash problem as that seems to be what it's trying to do when it crashes.

It sounds as though the Epsom software can't handle JPEG for some reason. Can you save JPEG files from other applications? Can you save to a different format from the scanner software?

If you can, then a possible workaround is to save the file in TIF or BMP format and then convert it with your graphics application.

Another workaroud, if your graphics program is TWAIN complient then you should be able to import a picture fom the scanner and save it with that program.

Use CCleaner to have a clear out. You can download a copy from the following reliable source:-

http://www.filehippo.com/

You can be quite selective as to what you use it for dealing with. Temporary files are a must, IMHO.

Optimist - 25 Sep 2007 11:37 - 6112 of 11003

Re IE7 crashing with Vista.

I often have this problem as well sometimes a tab will freeze and have to be closed with tax manager, sometimes IE7 will close and resart losing all my tabs and sometimes it will disapear completely with no warning.

I'm sure that Flash has something to do withit though I'm not sure that SUN Java is inocent (anyone know how to get MSVM on VISTA?).

If you have a problem site, it's worth right clicking on the link and selectiing Open in New Window. That way if it crashes, it doesn't take everything else with it.

Doc

I don't think that this problem would be solved with CCleaner. I had the problem on a brand new Vista box.

Seymour Clearly - 25 Sep 2007 11:40 - 6114 of 11003

Doc, I can save images from the web. The scanner doesn't seem to have any other options for image type - probably because it's such a cheap one. Tempted to throw it out and start again but I think that's wasteful!

Will contact Epson online support and see if they have a fix. Thanks for trying.

mg - 25 Sep 2007 12:29 - 6115 of 11003

Thanks guys and guyesses - looks as if it is a flash problem - but when I went outside and flashed a little old lady who was passing she called the police so I've got to go to court next Tuesday. Do you think the Magistrate knows the answer and that's how you I'll solve flash problem?

Any other suggestions 'cos I don't fancy having to do that every time I need to fix IE7 - Bill Gates never mentioned anything about spending long periods in court - or maybe that's why the EU are making him pay them shedloads of money :)

Seymour Clearly - 25 Sep 2007 12:38 - 6116 of 11003

Call Bill Gates for the defence I say.

Where did you get the CCTV footage from ?:(

chocolat - 25 Sep 2007 13:53 - 6119 of 11003

I'd say that was a result, meggers ;)

Thanks for the tip, Optimist.

Kayak - 25 Sep 2007 16:26 - 6120 of 11003

Not that I know anything about IE7 (nor about flashing) but you could try checking you have the latest Flash player.
