owever, we must recognize that Hamas and its terrorist partners bear responsibility for instigating the latest round of this conflict and need to refrain from further rocket and terrorist attacks. Israel exercised its inherent right to self-defense only after weeks of unprovoked attacks against civilian targets. Having picked a fight like a playground bully, Hamas cannot now credibly claim to be a victim.
Israel, like the United States, places a premium on avoiding collateral damage and has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on sophisticated weaponry to minimize to the greatest extent possible civilian casualties.

Hamas intentionally launches unguided rockets into densely populated areas to cause wanton destruction and kill as many innocents as possible. Hamas exploits their own citizens as human shields, locating rocket stockpiles in population centers, hopeful that images of dead Palestinians will rally the world to their extremist cause.
It is important to understand how this conflict started and how responsibly Israel has behaved, but also how future conflicts with Hamas can be prevented.

The most recent conflict was clearly the fault of Israel. They have already broken the terms of the new ceasfire as was to be expected, wih a new exchange of violence very soon.

at least Radio 4 "From our own correspondent" is about as unbiased as one could realistically expect ..... i'm afraid i only caught the last bit of the report from Gaza, but it certainly made pretty nasty listening and highlighted the disproportionate casualties suffered in Gaza, a great many of them civilians and children, relative to the very small handful of israelis

the total lack of regard by either side for the suffering they cause or inflict upon the innocent is totally sickening, but i am afraid there is no end in sight while the idealogues and zealots in both combatants camps are alowed to rule the roost

it would not have been amiss to add a comment along the lines that one could readily and accurately substitute israel and arabs with any from hamas, iranians or fundamentalists or indeed several others ...... however, such balance could and should never be expected from fahel and pals

Been reviewing this thread for the last week or so, and sorry to see that there has been no improvement in the type of commenting made by some.

I think the map provided by Hays of Israel and Palestine provides the bases for the present problems.



Would suggest some may find “Extreme Ramblings” by Mark Thomas as an informative humane book about his walk along the Israel’s barrier wall.

Watched Owen Jones a few times in the past.

Not sure what to make of him. He seems to do his homework and is fluent on what he speaks on.

Will be interested to see what he develops into at a later date and in what political direction he takes.


I haven’t a clue on how the conflict in Gaza will end, but at the end of the day it will probably end in talking, not aiming missiles at one another and by increasing the economic strengths of the Palestinians and acceptance that the “ordinary” Palestinians and Israelis have equal rights to exist and that coexistence would be better for both sides.

But I am an optimist.

sorry fred, but the REAL problem lies in the entrenched positions of the two main combatants ..... both believe that the land is theirs and have no interest in finding a solution .... all this is further promoted by the outsiders who back each for different and often nefarious reasons

as i have said before, until the ordinary citizens from both sides of the divide give an unequivocal and loud message to their leaders that it's peace that they want, the conflict will continue

Israel is threatening all sorts of unknown penalties when Abbas takes the application for UN observer status next Friday 29 November which is the anniversary of the original Israel/Palestine partition. Israel madly rushing round to all the EU countries to get them to vote against.

In one way I agree with you that is the ongoing problem is due to misleader-ship on both sides, with the probable corruption by some "political" leaders in order to keep their own authority for personal gain.

But the origin of the problem was the initial designating land to the Israelis, or for "Jews" and the seemingly endless greed of some of the religious and political leadership for expansion,

But what is done and is done, but the ME is in a state of flux and old contracts may not hold. I see the Israelis as running out of time to make a decent and acceptable agreements, before such changes are forced upon them.

Thanks for that H/S I didn't know that, I only mentioned it because of a poster that I saw in the hallway of a jewish restaurant we were in in Krakow last year. The words were something like "Come to Palestine to live" and not Israel.

Obviously a pro Israel site, but the majority of Palestine appears to be lost to Syria & Jordan rather than the state of Israel.

A lot of the details are correct as regards the area of Palestine early last century. The details of the varios wars against Israel are also correct. The cause is not discussed properly, in that the Arab population were not consulted regarding the Balfour agreement and partition of Palestine. The imposition of the state of Israel without agreement caused the wars and still causes them. The various atrocities that were committed by Israel against Palestinians after partition are also conveniently left out.
