Glad you got it sorted OK.

SC,

If I can find that URL explaining how Asus manufacture a meaningful percent of the 'named' brands I'll post it tomorrow.

They are big in memory boards for grown up PC's so could be good value in lappies I suppose.

I certainly would not buy from the Battersea boys if I did not live in SW6 - but again it's the price that matters and they were ahead of the game with my Asus S5.

Optimist....once again thanks forthat Disc..its worked fine..and I now have XP back on my new HDD.

Boots fine.., one thing though..it still stops me shortly after starting and I need to press F1 to continue through to load XP, which then loads fine. This was a problem that was occuring prior to my HDD problems.

I am happy yo do this, but is it something for me to worry about...as I suppose it should be loading directly through to the desktop upon booting up..

Optimist - 05 Nov 2007 23:54 - 6324 of 11003

Foale

I'm glad it worked for you.

What exactly does it say with regard to the F1 to continue message?

Is the PC clock correct?

It sounds as if either something is not set properly in the BIOS or itis losing a setting between reboots.

Not a MAM problem - all websites have been a bit sluggish or not available last night or this morning - no rhyme or reason but I wondered what the possible causes could be. The last time this sort of thing happened was when the broadband speed was upgraded and I had to rewire the internal house phone line to prevent the signal being split.

Is there any other possible cause guys?

This was one of the web pages that got me interested in Asus.

They do PDA's for Fujitsu. I have an Asus PDA and it works splendidly.

Question. Why didn't I buy the Asus UltraPortable instead of the Samsung? No answer to that one.

I suspect a lot of problems are DNS related. You could try Googling for some public DNS servers, and see if using them makes any difference.

Seymour Clearly - 06 Nov 2007 09:16 - 6330 of 11003

Thanks Optimist.

Optimist,

Just a line to say that I have just received two of those active USB extension cables that you pointed me to and they work perfectly - thus enabling me to work ten metres plus away from the tethered computer in my studio.

Now trying to come to terms with the Samsung Q1. It would be nice to be able to set up the DSLR Download software and then put the Q1 into standby - but I think that makes it lose the USB link to the camera. Probably not surprisingly - but it would be handy to find a work-around.

Also I need to check when I next start it up (it does take about four minutes to load from scratch and hence the wish to use Standby) as to whether it is NTFS or FAT. I heard that some of these small machines were being sold with FAT.

I'm getting a permanent hour-glass on this MAM site this morning.

Yes your Q1 would switch off the USB in standby mode. You should go into the power saving settngs and set it to switch the screen off in standby but never switch the CPU or disk off. This will of course drain the battery quicker.

As it's an ultra portable, you may find that there is both hardware and Wn XP power saving in place.

Re MAM loading slowly, I have no problems at preent. It could be their fault but it could also be a DNS problem not being able to locate an advert.

My Viewsonic VA1912w monitor has started to flicker in the last few days, what does this usually mean????? Its only over a year old

Haystack - 06 Nov 2007 16:16 - 6335 of 11003

Are you blinking more than usual? Maybe the screen is OK!

Richgit69 - 06 Nov 2007 16:23 - 6336 of 11003

Asus pre ordered. I must say some reviews of their products have been very good. Thanks for the tip - so far anyway. Any problems and I'll need you to go round :-)

ThePublisher - 06 Nov 2007 18:05 - 6338 of 11003

kernow,

Well done. Which one are you getting?

Tis the Asus Laptop F3Sc-AP19XP. Didn't fancy Vista

Seymour Clearly - 06 Nov 2007 23:04 - 6340 of 11003

Kernow, that's the one I think I'll be getting father-in-law as well - also want XP rather than Vista, because I'll have to sort it out when it goes wrong - and I won't have a clue with Vista. Have you any delivery date?
