FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

cynic - 24 Aug 2011 13:33 - 6581 of 21973

cash Dow has jumped 40/50 points so it's a good bet that the durable goods numbers were better than expected ...... shall post same here when they are apparent

skinny - 24 Aug 2011 13:38 - 6582 of 21973

Durable Goods Orders ex Transportation previous 0.6% consensus -0.2% actual 0.7%
Durable Goods Orders previous-1.3% consensus 2.1% actual 4.0%

HARRYCAT - 24 Aug 2011 13:43 - 6583 of 21973

DOW is currently -90 (CNN) which looks odd if the goods figures are correct.

splat - 24 Aug 2011 13:50 - 6584 of 21973

it was a fair bit worse before the figs HC and as ever, perhaps yesterday's push was just a tad too frothy!

cynic - 24 Aug 2011 13:50 - 6585 of 21973

cash Dow is 11150 (-15)

halifax - 24 Aug 2011 13:51 - 6586 of 21973

Harry dow is currently -6.

skinny - 24 Aug 2011 13:52 - 6587 of 21973

:-)

HARRYCAT - 24 Aug 2011 14:55 - 6589 of 21973

halifax, where do you access your futures figures? (or did DOW rise 84 points in 8 minutes?) Currently use CNN & Bloomberg but they sometimes differ wildly, though I assume they are time delayed.

cynic - 24 Aug 2011 15:40 - 6592 of 21973

Bernard M - 24 Aug 2011 15:56 - 6593 of 21973

ETX Capital also has live prices on it's platform

halifax - 24 Aug 2011 16:00 - 6594 of 21973

Harry as cynic suggests try IG.

cynic - 24 Aug 2011 16:02 - 6595 of 21973

meanwhile, all boiled over and Dow now barely ahead

halifax - 24 Aug 2011 16:06 - 6596 of 21973

cynic volatility game still being played.

skinny - 24 Aug 2011 16:31 - 6597 of 21973

Anyone catch the 80 point fall in the gold price?

splat - 24 Aug 2011 21:05 - 6598 of 21973

no, but not surprised skinny.

cynic - 25 Aug 2011 15:42 - 6599 of 21973

what a very strange day, though i guess some profit taking today/tomorrow was inevitable in the run up to Mr B's speech ...... but all rather unnecessarily beastly now, having been very chirpy early

jonuk76 - 25 Aug 2011 16:13 - 6600 of 21973

Huge drop on the Dax for some reason, down about 4% at one point, but now off lows.
