THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

the new pension only 13% will get the £155 a week and of the 13% 12% have never worked been unemployed for most of their lives those that worked will get on avge

I dont know if Tata will find a buyer for its steel plants in the UK but, if not, I believe the plants should be renationalised for a period and the tariffs on Chinese imports increased. Compensation for Tata should be set at a £1.
At present, the import dues are set by the EU at 24% while the US taxes at over 200%. I would rather see Chinese plants closing than Port Talbot. Once those blast furnaces shut down, that will be it.

cynic - 30 Mar 2016 12:03 - 69523 of 81564

quite so, but true renationalisation would not be a solution

why does the world still seem to think that china's gdp is running at ~7%?
it's absolute rubbish, as is shown by the need for its steel and other goods to be dumped on the world

grannyboy - 30 Mar 2016 12:35 - 69524 of 81564

China's GDP may not be running at 7%, but at around 6% that's not to be sniffed at, and a lot of countries would be over the moon to be having that kind of growth...

But its still growth, take in last years of around the 6.8% mark and the previous 7%+, and over 10 years compounded, thats decent growth...

cynic - 30 Mar 2016 12:40 - 69525 of 81564

it would be except from a historical view and that most other economies around the world are struggling badly
have a look at how world shipping is faring and that will tell you plenty

grannyboy - 30 Mar 2016 12:51 - 69526 of 81564

Agree but the Chinese government stated last year they were going to concentrate on internal growth until the world economy started to recover.

I did say renationalise for a period C. The main benificiary of cheap steel in the EU is? No prizes for the right answer.
While our Dave is sunning himself in the Lake District, sorry Lanzerote, maybe he will consider battling for the UK in that "reformed Europe" that he keeps banging on about. Note he and his acolytes don't say a reformed EU. Always Europe. We would all like a reformed EU but we are not going to see one until a lot of tears have been shed. Unfortunately those tears will be those of the common folk, not the Kinnocks of this world.
I wonder if we will see Plaid Cymru criticising EU steel policy? Maybe lovely Leanne will address the steelworkers and explain the tariff policy. Europe could do with a tad of inflation and German cars seems a good start.

TANKER - 30 Mar 2016 13:37 - 69528 of 81564

let it close down we need cheap steel cheap everthing

cynic - 30 Mar 2016 13:44 - 69529 of 81564

as has been pointed out, that sort of philosophy can and usually does come back to bite you hard
leaving aside the socio-economic impact, in the fullness of time, the cycle will turn once once more and commodity prices will increase as will the products for which they are used
if wholesale dumping is allowed without check in times of glut, resulting in certain industries being put out of business, then in due course, there will be a lack of competition with just the few holding all the cards
not healthy at all

iturama - 30 Mar 2016 14:11 - 69530 of 81564

Cheap everything as long as it is not cheap labour from the EU. If you are going to criticise at least be consistent.
Chinese steel is not cheaper because their technology or productivity is so much greater. The yanks have recognised that and taken the steps to protect their national interest.

TANKER - 30 Mar 2016 14:24 - 69531 of 81564

I was taking the piss

iturama - 30 Mar 2016 14:30 - 69532 of 81564

Accepted

TANKER - 30 Mar 2016 14:49 - 69533 of 81564

2517GEORGE - 30 Mar 2016 14:53 - 69534 of 81564

and their pension liabilities?
2517

TANKER - 30 Mar 2016 15:13 - 69535 of 81564

2517 they would soon make the pension money back simple

grannyboy - 30 Mar 2016 15:19 - 69536 of 81564

The UK government isn't allowed to give out subsidies without the EXPLICIT permission of Brussels, and I don't recollect TATA receiving any taxpayers money...I could be wrong, but don't believe so..

TANKER - 31 Mar 2016 08:07 - 69537 of 81564

steel plants . what ever happens job loses will be over 20000.
has a conservative we must ignore the eu and re nationalise
but cut the wages by 20% to put in to the pension fund

grannyboy - 31 Mar 2016 08:41 - 69538 of 81564

It's being reported on SKY that in all probability the government will put some money into the Steel industry 'in the short term'...Precisely short term, like until after the referendum...

Cameron's most likely been on the phone to his masters in Brussels asking permission to hand some money out to make it appear as if they give a fig...

MaxK - 31 Mar 2016 08:47 - 69539 of 81564

Cameroon flying in to save the steel plants...dream on, it's all part of the scam.
