THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

no idea, but if it's a major printer like delarue, then your pension fund may well have ...... no doubt they will hold arms and tobacco and drinks shares too

Fred1new - 07 Apr 2016 13:10 - 69782 of 81564

No, I don't hold any of your described shares.

Held Chemring once for a short time only.

The effort of answering your previous question would take more effort than I wish to expend on you.

But my "feelings" are there is need of a review of taxation in general and the reasons for such in a developed society.

But, probably you are too insular to see further than your what is of immediate advantage to yourself.

Grab and hoard comes to mind.

ALL this talk of tax havens is just a smoke screen compared to the really important issue of whether to remain or LEAVE the EU..

Because when you consider that 19 BILLION POUNDS goes to Brussels, and another 12.2 BILLION pounds goes in oversea's aid, someone using an offshore tax haven to 'avoid' tax then there are no comparisons...

So long as its not someone who says one thing then benefits from another.

As from Monday, 11 April 2016, this is what will be happening in Northampton (my local town):

Thursday 07 April 2016

A team of two private enforcers will begin issuing on-the-spot fines to litterbugs on Monday as part of the
borough council’s plan to crack down on mess – including cigarette butts.

The enforcers from private company 3GS Environmental Solutions will begin patrolling the streets from Monday – issuing £80 penalties tackle people who drop litter or leave dog mess.

The company is being contracted at no cost to the council, but it will retain all of the money it collects from fines. A spokesperson for Northampton Borough Council confirmed this week that an £80 fine can be issued for anyone caught dropping cigarette ends.

Over the past three days the team of two have been on an “induction week” it is understood, and have been visiting areas of the town to find the areas where littering is a problem. The enforcers will not have a remit to pick up fly-tipped waste or bulky items, but are due to start properly on Monday.

Councillor Rufia Ashraf (Lab, St James) has long campaigned to see her ward cleared up, and says the move is a step in the right direction.

She said; “I think it is about time we had something - but it will only work as long as this company is robust in its enforcement.”

Leader of Northampton Borough Council Councillor Mary Markham said: “Carrying out more enforcement with a visible presence over and above the service already provided by our environmental wardens should act as a deterrent and send a very clear message that we will not tolerate behaviour that turns Northampton into an unclean and untidy town.”

The company, 3GS, claims that between 75 and 80 per cent of all people fined end up paying. It is currently operating a similar model in Brighton.

Non-payment of the crime will be treated as a criminal offence. However, early repayment will reduce the fine to £50.

Obviously, the prevention of litter in any and all areas has a great deal to do with political will.

If you absolutely hate litter louts, dog poo, fly tipping, the chucking out of food waste and drink bottles/cartons by vehicle drivers at road junctions and car parks, etc, etc, then this is what you could encourage your local council to do to try to stop it.

ie. Kick off a scheme to deal with litter, along the same lines as that kicked off by
Northampton BC.

Funnily enough, as you leave M1 turn off 15 to drive towards Northampton, you will see unkempt verges , lots of litter on the verges, lots of dumped road cones, old road works signs and the like.

All of this mess is down to the Highways Agency who just don't do anything about any of these problems.

All the local Council can do, is to 'pass the message on'.

Needless to say, the Highways Agency don't get fined for their 'non-compliance' or 'non-performance' of 'what they have been contracted to do'.

Labour MPs are not pulling punches on the tax affairs of David Cameron’s father, calling him “absolutely disgusting” despite there still being some dispute over the extent of any tax avoidance that actually took place. What do they have to say about another prominent politician’s father and his tax affairs?

When Tony Benn’s wife died, he took steps to immediately pass his assets onto his children to reduce their eventual inheritance tax burden. The kids reportedly took part ownership of the family home in Holland Park, which was then quickly sold for £4.1 million. He also placed Stansgate House and its estate in trust, another nifty inheritance tax avoidance measure. Hilary Benn and his siblings directed benefited from his father’s careful tax planning. No wonder the Shadow Foreign Secretary has yet to comment on Dave’s predicament…

cynic - 07 Apr 2016 15:25 - 69794 of 81564

the matter of concern with the cameron family is that panama was used as haven of choice
red flags fly (in many senses!) quite rightly as soon as one hears that, for that country has to be one of the shadiest for such dealings

Haystack - 07 Apr 2016 15:27 - 69795 of 81564

Sadiq Khan is no stranger to dodgy backers. In an attempt to clean up his murky image, his campaign released a list of 100 business backers in the Evening Standard last Friday. Most were drawn from the few business backers still loyal to Corbyn’s Labour. The list includes backers such as Saker Nusseibeh, CEO of Hermes Investment Management – a group that currently manages 15 offshore funds – as well as top RBS banker Martin Bailey and Bank of America VP Jacob Taylor. Taxpayer owned RBS shelled out €23.8 million to German prosecutors in December to settle a tax evasion investigation, and was lambasted for racking up £1 billion in tax breaks earlier this year, while Bank of America recently had to dismantle a special tax avoidance group in disgrace. Khan’s business support is drawn from the types of companies his leader wants to investigate…

Haystack - 07 Apr 2016 15:28 - 69796 of 81564

Panama was not the place of the tax haven. It is only where the accountants that had papers stolen is based.

cynic - 07 Apr 2016 15:45 - 69797 of 81564

hmm
so why would panama be involved at all?

i guess the correct question to ask is where was this company and its offshoots initially formed and then (sub)registered?
something like that anyway

==================

subsidiary questions then arise as to whether cameron (father) declared his interest, direct or otherwise, in these companies to hmrc, as i would have thought was his obligation

if he went through some byzantine rigmarole to avoiding having to declare interest to hmrc, the more it stinks

and then, if all was absolutely snow white and above board, why the need for byzantine measures?

Stan - 07 Apr 2016 16:24 - 69798 of 81564

Typical "distraction" tactics from H/S in trying to switch the "off shore" tax avoidance/evasion scandal away from the "Con" artists.

Strange Moneyam reckon LLOY lost 1.26 p today where IGINDEX reckon it lost 2.76 P ,there are other discrepancies TEF being one ,not seen this before .

Worth looking at the offshore users in Labour.
