How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Bugz - 07 Jan 2006 19:07 - 7685 of 10502

Yeah talk about volatile odds!! Amazing!!!! Could have picked up 17.5, and 5 minutes lates laid at 1.14!!!!

Fundamentalist - 07 Jan 2006 19:13 - 7686 of 10502

Bugz

Fundamentalist - 07 Jan 2006 19:25 - 7687 of 10502

5-3

alonso scored from inside his own half after the keeper had come up for a corner (his two goals must have a combined yardage of over 100 yds lol)

I saw the last goal! Me and the family were sobbing over ET on ITV. I was outvoted on the footy.

Just watched the highlights on BBC web site, what a brilliant game. Would have been ace to trade as well. Ah well.

Apart from the fact that this was a wonderful cup-tie and a superb endorsement that the FA Cup is the tops wherever you look, you have to feel desperately sorry for Luton who contributed so much. I just couldn't get it wrong tonight. Prior to KO I backed over 2.5g at 1.95. When it was 2-1 I backed Luton to score the next goal at 7, then a bit on Liverpool at 1.54 to cover my stake. When it was 3-2 I backed Liverpool to win at 5.3. When it was 3-4 I laid Liverpool at 1.09 to cover my stake -just in case.
I think I've finished with laying (following advice from this thread) and I just picked what I considered were value bets. With handsome odds in my favour I just needed the odd one to come up to put me in profit. In the event they all came up -but I'm wise enough to know it's not going to happen often.
I know this isn't 'trading' as you do it - but I'm comfortable with it, which is what matters.

Well done schiff. Can't all have been luck.

Re laying: I don't think you should give up on it. It has its place. Just avoid high lay prices. Too much worry.

schiff - 07 Jan 2006 20:43 - 7692 of 10502

I'm sure you are right harlosh. As I mentioned before laying odds-on favourites, for me, is fun. I have got more pleasure in the past laying a 2/5 loser than backing
a 5/2 winner.

schiff - 07 Jan 2006 20:54 - 7693 of 10502

Incidentally Harlosh I'm very chuffed with soccerstand - so thanks. It retains the page on show in full which livescore doesn't (it clears it so you have to scroll down each time). I also like the little GOAL!! alerts and the stats on display far outdo the zero stats on livescore as well as the good, but in comparison, limited stats on soccerbase.

Harlosh - 07 Jan 2006 21:01 - 7694 of 10502

Glad you find it better schiff.

Fundamentalist - 07 Jan 2006 21:48 - 7695 of 10502

Nice work schiff

well done mate

Dil - 07 Jan 2006 21:59 - 7696 of 10502

I laid Liverpool at half time at 3.35 and backed them at 18 about 2 seconds before they scored their second goal.

Sweated a bit when they were awarded that penalty but all in all not bad result.

This is getting a bit scary! Last night I had a position in the Braga v Sp Lisbon match. Betfair, Soccer Stand and livescore screens all open - hoping and expecting to be in control!
I'd backed Braga to win at 2.88 and was quite happy when it was 2-0. Then everything went haywire. The betfair screen implied the score had changed but no info on SS and LS. Then - apparently - another goal. The SS and LS screens showed at various times thereafter 2-0, 2-1, 3-0, 2-2 - so I'd no idea where I was up to!
I managed to get a lay or two in before the game was over (B won 3-2 scoring last) and I won money. Assumed it was all because the match was 'in a foreign country' (lol).
Then today SS had Fulham leading 1-0, then it went to 1-1, then to 0-1 (the correct score). Ceefax might be a bit slow but it seems more accurate than these super-sites. And you can more or less assume that betfair is on the ball, though you sometimes have to guess at the score.
I think it all means going carefully unless you are watching the match itself.
Incidentally, I said flattering things about the FA Cup yesterday and I now think you can add the Scottish version! My bet for the first goal in the first 10 minutes went down so I backed Clyde to score next @ 6.6 (a sporting bet I thought). Not only did they do that but scored twice AND missed a penalty!!! As things stand Celtic look on their way out - still 0-2 and 7 minutes to go. Roy Keane eat your heart out - or whatever's behind your rib-cage.

schiff - 08 Jan 2006 14:47 - 7700 of 10502

PS - SS is showing 89m played and Clyde winning 2-0. Ceefax shows Celtic as having scored in the 83rd minute and down 2-1. See what I mean!!
