OECD Sees Further Uptick In Global Growth In 2018

The global economy is set for a further uptick next year, but strong sustainable, and inclusive medium-term growth is not yet secured, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said in its Interim Economic Outlook, released Wednesday.

The global economy is forecast to grow 3.5% this year and 3.7% in 2018, with industrial production and trade picking up and further acceleration in the rebound of technology spending.

The projection for 2017 was left unchanged, while the outlook for 2018 was revised up from 3.6%.

In the US, growth is estimated at 2.1% in 2017 and 2.4% in 2018, supported by stronger consumer spending and business investment.

Citing stronger growth in key European countries, euro area is projected to grow 2.1% in 2017 and 1.9% in 2018.

In the UK, the previously identified growth slowdown is expected to continue through 2018, while uncertainty remains over the outcome of negotiations around the decision to leave the EU, the OECD said.

The UK is projected to grow 1.6% in 2017 and 1% in 2018.

UK Police Arrest 2 More Suspects In London Tube Attack, 5 Now Held

LONDON (Alliance News) - British police on Wednesday arrested two more suspects linked to last week's terrorist attack on the London underground railway.

The Metropolitan Police said counter-terrorism officers detained a 48-year-old man and a 30-year-old man in Newport, Wales, following the arrest of a 25-year-old man in the town late Tuesday.

Two other suspects from the London area, aged 18 and 21, were arrested earlier after a home-made bomb partially detonated on an underground train at London's Parsons Green station on Friday.

Officers were continuing to search two properties in Newport and two others in outer London on Wednesday, the police said.

"This continues to be a fast-moving investigation," Commander Dean Haydon, head of counter-terrorism for the Metropolitan Police, said in a statement.

"A significant amount of activity has taken place since the attack on Friday," Haydon said.

"We now have five men in custody and searches are continuing at four addresses," he said.

"Detectives are carrying out extensive inquiries to determine the full facts behind the attack."

About 30 people were injured when a bucket packed with nails and the explosive triacetone triperoxide partially detonated after being left on a busy train during the morning rush hour. Many of the victims suffered burns.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State extremist group, but police cautioned that such claims were "routine...whether or not they've had any previous engagement with the individuals involved."

The UK budget deficit decreased to its lowest level for August since 2007, data from the Office for National Statistics showed. Public sector net borrowing excluding interventions decreased by GBP1.3 billion to GBP5.7 billion in August. This was the lowest August borrowing since 2007.
In the current financial year-to-date period, PSNB fell GBP0.2 billion to GBP28.3 billion. The Office for Budget Responsibility forecast the PSNB will be GBP58.3 billion during the financial year ending March 2018.
Public sector net debt totalled GBP1,773.3 billion at the end of August, which was equivalent to 88.0% of gross domestic product, an increase of GBP150.9 billion on August 2016.

Uber lost its private hire licence
Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.
TfL has concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence.

Uber's approach and conduct demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility which could have potential public safety and security implications, it said.
Uber has 21 days to appeal, during which it can continue to operate.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement: "I fully support TfL's decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety and security."

Just looked at a letter that i received Friday from the NHS. On the back it had advice in Albanian, Arabic, Bengali,Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Somali, Turkish and Urdu. Make of that what you will.

Thanks to half a dozen loony nationalists we get all letters in English and Welsh off NHS , councils , utility firms , dvla etc. Even my TV license comes on two separate pages , one in English and one in Welsh.
