THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

The scandal at Oxfam is just one of many in this growth sector, I have commented here before about the obscene pay scales of the so called charity hierarchy. One such charity with income of £8m paid it's highest earner £230,000-£240,000 in 2016, another the Thrombosis Research Institute paid the same amount despite having £17m of income.

Surprised there has been no comments here re Oxfam etc

cynic - 12 Feb 2018 11:19 - 80102 of 81564

i don't have much interest in this latest "scandal", but certainly i have refused to contribute to oxfam for many years, as their "o'head" is far too high

While so much of many Charity`s funding is swallowed by the excessively high salaries, the public will be reluctant to help.

In the late nineties I was invited to join in a jolly(a convention they called it) through a former friend, who`s sister (a lawyer) ran this large Charity - not only were they offering to pay flight tickets to Aruba - a Caribbean Island - but also three nights in a 4*+ all expenses paid including food and wine. I declined and expressed my disgust and that was the end of the friendship.

Since then, all Charity donations have been selective and mainly local - to what I perceive as being deserving. As they say, charity begins at home, so look around yourselves and see how many are struggling on our streets.

Charity funds being used to support dictatorships in Africa, and supporting corruption around the world, so some of the counties can use their own money to buy our weapons and wage war.

How many get gongs for their so called charity work as well , what do they get from these charities in return . It's just a nonsense .

Clocktower - 12 Feb 2018 13:35 - 80105 of 81564

Talking about gongs - what makes me laugh is that companies raise money from their customers one way or another, like The Entertainer - used to ask at the till do you wish to make a donation - which embarrassed many to say NO and the travel/airlines that have little boxes that you need to untick not to give a donation - which the bosses then proudly announce "We raised XYZ for Charity" We should be rewarded with a gong grinon their faces.

Sad part they do get them for their good works but heaven help they will not dig in their own pockets unless they have family that suffer some misfortune.

Still they like top to take the huge bonus payments they get rewarded with.

That is not the only donation they may have left behind - they may have left behind some little relatives.

cynic - 13 Feb 2018 10:00 - 80108 of 81564

FRED - if you want to support oxfam then that is your choice ..... i won't touch them as the management has always taken far too much out of the pot, and the shop staff always get first pick mof the "juicy bits" that come through the door - my wife worked in one of the shops several years back

similarly, i (sadly) will not support any african-based charity, as i know damn well that much of that aid will get syphoned off by the local gov't

cynic - 13 Feb 2018 10:04 - 80109 of 81564

just been posted that great thatcherism, which is far from inaccurate .....
"the trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money"

============

similarly, the great ideal of collectivism in the 20's and 30's in russia was a total disaster, resulting in famine and much worse

Fred1new - 13 Feb 2018 10:09 - 80110 of 81564

Manuel.

You will be better burying your loot in the back garden or under your coffin.

cynic - 13 Feb 2018 10:12 - 80111 of 81564

i support the charities i choose ... the ones above do not even get into the hat
just for the record, i don't/won't support israeli-focused charities either

=========

btw, i assume you were a great believer in collectivism (aka communism), at least in your youth

2517GEORGE - 13 Feb 2018 10:13 - 80112 of 81564

'' i won't touch them as the management has always taken far too much out of the pot, and the shop staff always get first pick mof the "juicy bits" that come through the door''

That's the case with most charities. As for giving to them, we all (taxpayers) do whether we like it or not, 75% of charities receive donations from the government (taxpayer), why give more?

BTW cynic you have left yourself wide open (post 80108) as to where you met your wife lol

cynic - 13 Feb 2018 10:14 - 80113 of 81564

she was on special offer in my local oxfam shop :-)

Haystack - 13 Feb 2018 10:28 - 80114 of 81564

There are now accusations of sexual harassment in the Oxfam stores

Fred1new - 13 Feb 2018 10:28 - 80115 of 81564

Manuel,

You are full of assumptions.

Lucky, one is not consumption.

Haystack - 13 Feb 2018 10:30 - 80116 of 81564

This is on the online Oxfam shop

Haystack - 13 Feb 2018 10:32 - 80117 of 81564

New slogan for Oxfam

Please give generously so that aid workers can have access to clean prostitutes

Fred1new - 13 Feb 2018 10:38 - 80118 of 81564

You mean like some sitting members of the tory party?

VICTIM - 13 Feb 2018 10:39 - 80119 of 81564

Foreign Aid should also be looked into surely , whenever free money is available you can bet criminals will be all over it , to see these pleas for money for water aid and medical help nowadays is beyond belief , it's been going on for decades , or is this just the Charity beefing up it's bank balance .
