Lots of interesting info' and articles to download at the following site.

Here's one for instance on buying a laptop:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-laptop-buying-guide-2011/

When you get there, for more Guides just click on the 'Guides' Tab at the top of the page.

Skinny - Are you still getting the Java error messages? Do you use Sharescope?

skinny - 01 Jul 2011 08:27 - 9543 of 11003

Kevin - yes and no. Its Java related and I'm getting it whether I load my monitors (ADVFN) in IE or CHROME. I'll have to explore further at the weekend. Unfortunatley it will probably be beyond me, so may have to call in the calvery.

Skinny - The notes continue to litter my desktop. I think it's connected with MAM stockwatch streaming. There also seems to be a conflict between S/scope and Stockwatch when S/scope first loads. It's annoying but doesn't seem to be a problem. I sent Java a bug report and they replied saying it was a new bug. But it looked suspiciously likle a computer-generated message.

skinny - 01 Jul 2011 09:01 - 9545 of 11003

Hmmm - ok thanks Kevin.

iiwarm - 01 Jul 2011 13:09 - 9546 of 11003

Kev/Skinny
I'm still getting those Java files on desktop. don't use s/scope and only get it when MAM stockwatch is on

The Other Kevin - 01 Jul 2011 13:13 - 9547 of 11003

Beginning to look as though Stockwatch is the culprit.

skinny - 01 Jul 2011 13:21 - 9548 of 11003

I don't use either, so I'm guessing its Java?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 01 Jul 2011 13:26 - 9549 of 11003

all,

you should be able to turn off debugging by going into the java console, this should stop the notepad error reports being produced and clogging up your desktop. If you have a java application running, you should see the java cup in the system tray (bottom right of your screen). right click on that and open java control panel.

Now click on advanced and expand the debugging section - make sure there are no ticks next to enable tracing, enable logging and show applet lifecycle exceptions. Click apply and then ok, and this should hopefully stop the issues you have.

If this does not work, try googling 'java debugging switch off' or words to that effect for any different instructions on the subject.

I`ve had that problem since starting using WIN7/IE, its carp it really is, you get all sorts of hints and tips popping up when a problem happens , but nothing resolves it, and don`t talk to me about IE9 ,

grrrr!!!!

HARRYCAT - 01 Jul 2011 14:22 - 9551 of 11003

Good ol' fashioned XP with IE8. Can't beat it! ;o)

skinny - 01 Jul 2011 14:25 - 9552 of 11003

Thats what I've got!

Seymour Clearly - 01 Jul 2011 14:27 - 9553 of 11003

Using Win 7 64bit & Firefox without any problems.....

The Other Kevin - 01 Jul 2011 14:48 - 9554 of 11003

Thanks for your interest in my problem, Ian. Done as you suggested - but there were no ticks against the three items you mentioned. Hmm...?

Sequestor - 01 Jul 2011 14:52 - 9555 of 11003

Aye Firefox is much better, don`t know why I don`t use it all the time.

Sequestor - 01 Jul 2011 14:53 - 9556 of 11003

I think Firefox is the answer Kevin none of my boxes were ticked either,

ExecLine - 01 Jul 2011 16:10 - 9557 of 11003

Have you tried Windows in the Firebox?

Sequestor - 01 Jul 2011 17:16 - 9558 of 11003

yep burns well.

Help! My daughter's laptop suddenly developed a problem this morning - to begin with, it had difficulty connecting to our router. After a struggle, I managed to get it to connect. But then I noticed the connection speed was an abysmal 2 MB rather than the normal 54 MB. As a result, she can barely play on her favourite Disney sites. Strange thing is, all the other machines connect absolutely fine at full speed. It's just this one laptop.

It's a Win7 machine and I believe there was a Windows update applied this morning, after which things went bad.

What could be the cause? I can put up images of the network settings if that helps...

ChuffChuffChaser - 02 Jul 2011 17:12 - 9560 of 11003

Why not try a system restore to a point/date prior to the installation of the Windows update & see if that improves the speed?
