Northern Rock (NRK)

irlee57 - 13 Aug 2007 09:03

any comments, thoughts, on this stock.

halifax - 16 Sep 2007 21:51 - 81 of 1029

I believe any quoted company can request suspension of its shares and the LSE is required to maintain an orderly market in FTSE stocks.

foale - 16 Sep 2007 22:40 - 82 of 1029

Bank of England lender of last resort.....will any bank ever use that in the way that NRK did...I think not...

they will find other ways of dressing up bridging finance....

seawallwalker - 16 Sep 2007 23:50 - 83 of 1029

Okay halifax, we will see what transpires.

Good night all.

cynic - 17 Sep 2007 08:12 - 84 of 1029

so much for my thought yesterday that AL were already oversold .... down about 110 this morning ...... meanwhile NRK has been hammered by a further 140

seawallwalker - 17 Sep 2007 08:15 - 85 of 1029

As I said there will be slurs on their peers.

AL and BB. taking a beating.

This will will continue.

short postions only on these just now, (says he stating the obvious).

cynic - 17 Sep 2007 08:25 - 86 of 1029

not the time to do it though i suspect ..... just as easy for sp in AL or BB or NRK to shoot upwards too, even if only becuase of profit-taking .... AL hit because of several broker downgrades

seawallwalker - 17 Sep 2007 08:28 - 87 of 1029

Yep I suspect the shorters are closing positions on all 3 just now hence the slight up trend.

the next event will be when people hear NRK have dropped up to 30% again today and rush off to empty their accounts, that will then have another effect on the sp and so on till it disappears up it's own......

Falcothou - 17 Sep 2007 08:40 - 88 of 1029

Made a few quid going long on nrk and bb with tight stop losses

cynic - 17 Sep 2007 08:53 - 89 of 1029

shame you didn't take the plunge with AL then as if you were a real smart (and very brave!) cookie, you could have made 70p from the bottom

When I say a few quid I mean about enough for a curry and a few pints both hit stop losses very soon

The Sunday Times reports that one take-over bid for Northern Rock has already been blocked. Detailed talks between Northern Rock and Lloyds TSB took place but a prospective bid by Lloyds was blocked by the Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority, for fear it would unsettle financial markets.

Thought the last line quite amusing.

mitzy - 17 Sep 2007 10:12 - 93 of 1029

Down to 250p next.

cynic - 17 Sep 2007 10:30 - 94 of 1029

why 250? ..... i don't think anyone has any idea what NRK may be worth, which is why it is such a dangerous trade unless you are already short at a considerably higher level.

maddoctor - 17 Sep 2007 10:32 - 95 of 1029

these downers are short and one hopes that a bid will screw them sometime today

cynic - 17 Sep 2007 10:42 - 96 of 1029

a bid is unquestionably on the cards, but the great unknown is at what price? ...... i am also inclined to belive that it would be > the current 310, but who knows ....... gather you have been walloped here; in which case my commiserations ..... i have suffered similarly with AL and to a slightly lesser extent with BARC

maddoctor - 17 Sep 2007 10:46 - 97 of 1029

life changing hit possible , what bugs me here are the shorts gloating and trying to drive the price down further with no consideration for the 1.5 million depositors with nrk and the fallout with other banks if something serious happens - mindless Sun readers all!

seawallwalker - 17 Sep 2007 10:52 - 98 of 1029

Comments on a bb make no difference to what is happening in the market place, those that think they are achieving something with a "clever" comment are just deluding themselves.

Those others that think they do should think again.

Bad luck md, it could have been me.

Strawbs - 17 Sep 2007 10:59 - 99 of 1029

While Northern Rock is the bank in the press, I suspect the wider run on banks may be down to speculation ahead of the US banking season results. If losses are bad then I guess it would impact UK banks too. It could just be people are selling with the crowd now just in case because it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Of course the unexpected could always happen. If the Fed decides to drop interest rates dramatically, and the banks losses are only moderate, the shorters could well get a nasty surprise. They certainly won't be gloating then.

In my opinion....

Strawbs.
