How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

For anyone who was trading last night, backing Woods in the clubhouse after he finished was the biggest gift ever. He went to 3.2 after he finished with most of his challengers still 3, 4 or 5 left to play, and finished the day odds on favourite.

Hard to see past him today, tho if he shoots high theres an awful lot of players who can win this from the pack, tho personally expect Woods to win as he wants from here

On Justin Rose since the first day, was about to green up last night when he managed two consecutive bogeys, moved out from 7s to 15s in no time at all :(
Decided to let it run today and see what happens, big upside for small downside, but might take some off depending on how the last round goes. Difficult to see Tiger losing from here, but he's not played especially well. On the other hand Rose has played steady and is more than capable of staying on the leaderboard. Of course lots of other contenders have moved into contention.

Cricket going quite nicely :)
Laid Aus at 1.30, 1.34 & 1.39, Covered at 1.87 prior to Bell's dismissal and greened up at 1.70 prior to Pieterson's.
Think the wicket has 300 runs in it, so anything less for England and I would expect an Aussie win.

New slogan for betfair ...

Betfair quite frankly is rubbish when it comes to these 'out' periods. Laid NZ early on and was trying to green up when the sytem crashed. Can't imagine Ireland will win so unless the site is up soon, looks like Betfair will cost me money. Can't understand why they don't have a back up server for this situation. Can't even do anything on the phone. Morons!!

WOODIE - 09 Apr 2007 20:30 - 10295 of 10502

back at last

Scripophilist - 09 Apr 2007 21:09 - 10296 of 10502

That outage cost me my worst ever loss. It's a right pain when that happens. I can take normal losses but those beyond your control are always a right pain. Even worse, they always seem to go against you don't they!!!

WOODIE - 09 Apr 2007 21:15 - 10297 of 10502

scrip cant you have a word with them to put in a back up service when the main one fails?

ptholden - 09 Apr 2007 21:28 - 10298 of 10502

Sorry to hear that Peter, fortunately one of my bets that I couldn't close won anyway; the cricket I have had to trade out at a loss having been in a position to green up. Overall a profit, but only 25% of what it should have been. Might as well have used a bookie :(

Pinsticker - 09 Apr 2007 23:42 - 10299 of 10502

Sorry to hear about your pains with Betfair, Peter.

Any reasonable answer for the following situation, other than Betfair is happy to behave like a typical UK Bank and hang onto your money for as long as they can get away with it... :

League 2 Winner Market - only 4 teams can now possibly win this league, yet Betfair is still quoting on 10 teams. Not a problem unless you are green on the potential 4 (which I am) and yet have "liabilities" according to Betfair on other selections which in reality are now out of the running and do not exist.

Seems a teeny weeny bit of a con to me.

WOODIE - 10 Apr 2007 06:17 - 10300 of 10502

pinsticker the reason could be even though they cant win it on points at the moment one of the top teams could have points deducted between now and the end of the season, the chances of this are remote.
