All's working well except that I receive a message "security settings prevent the running of directX"?

Spaceman - 06 Apr 2004 09:01 - 1563 of 11003

Mr E, I dont think any of the the things we suggested above should have caused that, the message is from IE and is related to the security settings you have in tools/internet options/security under the internet tab.

Mr Euro - 06 Apr 2004 09:30 - 1564 of 11003

Thanks Spaceman, should I change it? What does it do?

Nostalgia Corner:

I'm a great hoarder, and have decided to throw out a whole load of discs (3.5") with old software on. Have kept them for years - just in case but reckon their use has expired now. Anyone recognise these:

DrGenius
DrDOS (You could compress your hard disc using this and effectively almost double your HD size)
Borland Paradox
AsEasyAs (123 shareware clone)
Claris Works
Borland QuattroPro
MsDos (various flavours)
Windows 3.11

Black bin bag time :-)

Kayak - 09 Apr 2004 00:04 - 1566 of 11003

SC, you can sell this sort of stuff on eBay for surprising amounts. Just sold Windows 95 on floppies for 15. People with a hobby of restoring very old machines need the old software. Have a search to see what those things have sold for recently.

Dil - 09 Apr 2004 01:20 - 1567 of 11003

Kayak , hope you can help .... my pc thinks its 2001 and keeps seeing ghosts

cheers

:-)

Seymour Clearly - 09 Apr 2004 09:17 - 1568 of 11003

Kayak, had't thought of that.

Will rescue the bin bag :-)

15 for Win 95. Gordon Bennet!!!!

Dil - 09 Apr 2004 11:49 - 1570 of 11003

Getting a lot of "Mail Delivery (failure 'my e-mail address')" e-mail coming in these last few days.

Also, my ISP (OneTel) is filtering out e-mails, which contain virus attachments, from "obviously infected but they don't know" computer systems.

They come in with messages saying such things as:

A message filter removed the following attachment(s) from this message:

data.exe

A message filter removed the following attachment(s) from this message:

document_word.pif

A message filter removed the following attachment(s) from this message:

mp3music.pif

A message filter removed the following attachment(s) from this message:

message.scr

This is quite an excellent fringe benefit for OneTel customers.

Hi everyone,

Great tread,I want to use two screens with a router, have XP and Win98. Can I use them together or do I have to upgrade win98 to XP also? What router would you suggest?

regards

Pat

You should be able to use them togather however it may be easier if you have XP on both. I use a Dlink wireless router which runs fine..

Computer systems worldwide face an attack by variations of the already-rampant Netsky virus, experts warned today.
Variants of the virus, which has plagued systems for the past two months, are surfacing with a vengeance, and computer security firms expect a fresh and intensifying electronic offensive next week. New variant Netsky.Q is designed to attack websites that offer filesharing services, such as Kazaa - best-known for its music downloading.

The experts say a further mutation, Netsky.T, is primed to flood systems with a 'denial-of-service' attack next Wednesday. It will bombard systems with electronic requests, clogging up or slowing down networks. The attack is scheduled to last for 10 days.

The latest versions of the original Netsky, which has generated millions of virus-infected mails since it emerged earlier this year, arrive as a file attachment in an email and sometimes claim to have been scanned for viruses and given a clean bill of health.
The ploy of adding a 'no virus found' message at the bottom of the email is deliberately designed to appeal to those who are too impatient to practise safe computing,' said Graham Cluley of antivirus company Sophos.

Interesting, Doc. What site?

DocProc - 10 Apr 2004 11:11 - 1578 of 11003

Check on this site to see if your CD drive can be opened remotely from the Internet:

http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/info.asp

Go down the page until you see

"If you would like, I'll attempt to open your CD Drive and read part of your win.ini file off your hard drive."

- and then click the appropriate link for your machine's Windows operating system.

Spoooooky!

Kayak

Well, I found the following site extremely interesting:

http://ip.discoveryvip.com/

but the testing was located here:

http://www.auditmypc.com/

Some very interesting stuff here with, amongst other things, a different kind of auction going on:
