A Brief Look At The Week Ahead
This is historically one of the quietest weeks of the City year. With the market closed last Friday and tomorrow, bankers and executives caught planes, trains and automobiles out of the City to enjoy the long weekend and more. The Sainsbury soap opera is likely to get most attention this week. The CVC-led private equity consortium that is examining a 10bn bid for J Sainsbury has just five days left before the 13th April "put up of shut up" deadline imposed by the Takeover Panel. With Kohlberg Kravis Roberts having dropped out of the bidding group and the Sainsbury family said to be insisting on a price of no less than 600p, at least 50p more than the suitors want to offer, the prospects look bleak that a bid will be forthcoming, let alone successful. One way or another, the situation should be much clearer come Friday. No-frills carrier easyJet will publish its passenger numbers on Tuesday. These are expected to be good, bearing out the increased traffic from the rush of holidaymakers hoping to catch some late-season skiing before the snow melts. The carrier, which last week announced a new route between Bristol and Warsaw, will now be gearing up for the high summer season. SABMiller is slated to provide its trading update on Wednesday. Driven by the increasing popularity of organic beers among discriminating drinkers, the brewer is expected to point to a rosy outlook across its sprawling global operations. The other big factors pushing the numbers for the producer of Miller Lite and Pilsner Urquell will be the thirst of the Chinese. Volume growth in the country is running at 30% per year. The group's Bavaria brand, sold in Colombia, is also doing quite nicely. JJB Sports, the UK's number two sports retailer after Mike Ashley's Sports Direct, will publish its annual numbers on Thursday. The City will be hoping for continued improvement following JJB's success in reversing an earlier sales decline. On the same day, SMG, the struggling owner of Virgin Radio, will give its final results. These will be the first since Rob Woodward took over as CEO. The company was originally supposed to report last month but postponed its results amid a boardroom shake-up carried out to appease unhappy investors. The group's shareholders are said to have been approached by an agent on behalf of a potential US buyer. SMG is understood to have requested the City regulator to investigate the overtures by the anonymous suitor. Amongst others in the spotlight this week will be Vedanta on Tuesday and BP and Prezzo on Thursday. Good hunting! Greystone Thanks, as always to Digger, Kyoto and Supermum for their invaluable input to the Traders Thread (Greystone is Alan English, City Editor at MoneyAM.)
