SCi Entertainment in 2008/9 (SEG)

Silent Service - 17 Jul 2008 17:33

A quick and dirty survey of current GAME web site gives following Eidos games. The BBC online report http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7508743.stm
is from E 3 conference and gives number of machines in circulation. Also the relevant comment software titles like having two-year life spans on retail shelves.

This is the current state of GAME.co.uk web site (includes scheduled games)

21 Eidos games for DS out of 100 there are over 70 million
13 Eidos games for PC out of 100 there are many hundred million
10 Eidos games for XBox 360 out of 103
_8 Eidos games for Playstation2 out of 95
_6 Eidos games for Wii out of 100 there are just over 10 million
_5 Eidos games for PSP out of 99
_3 Eidos games for Playstation3 out of 100 there are just under 10 million

These are where Eidos is the publisher. XX million is machines in the world

As noted earlier the GAME web site doesnt show the new 3 Eidos games scheduled for Playstation3 or in some cases the other main consoles. They seem to have a limit of 100 games for each platform.

But the market for DS games and PC games is huge by available machines. Generally DS games sell at between PC Games and AAA games prices whilst PC games, possibly because of market size, are the cheapest. IMHO

Current (30 June 08) and Expected releases are separated in first half 2008/9 (end 31/12/08) for EIDOS by platform are:-

13 current with 8 (maybe 10) New games for DS replenishment 77%
_9 current with 4 (maybe 7) New games for PC replenishment 78%
_6 current with 4 (maybe 5) New games for Xbox 360 replenishment 83%
_7 current with 1 (maybe 5) New games for Playstation2 replenishment 71%
_4 current with 2 (maybe 5) New games for Wii replenishment 125%
_3 current with 0 (maybe 3) New games for Playstation3 replenishment 100%

(maybe X) are where a date isnt given or platform is not listed on game.co.uk but is on Gamestop.com. A 25% replenishment / current rate for a half year would just hold the current position. SEG, based on maybe/current, seems to be well ahead.

The DS, their most numerous platform, have games that cover a variety of age ranges with many for the 3+ and 12+ age groups. Some are very girlie (one very American girlie), others are aimed at boys, and some for adults. They are obviously trying to broaden their customer base.

Tuesday we should get an update of and an OUTLOOK for the future. But they appear to be replenishing their catalogue at an increasing rate which looks GOOD for the future.

The pre-eminence of Tomb Raider has not been overstated by company or me. At the moment it is vital to the companys success. But there is another emerging part of the company that is the Casual Games sector.

The company has 21 titles available for sale on DS alone:-

4 launched in 2007
8 launched since March 2008
7 to be launched August thro Sept
2 available for order but NYK release date.
(Source GAME.CO.UK)

Nintendo DS handheld has over 70 million units in the world (latest Video Game consoles, Playstation 3, Ninetendo Wii, and Xbox 360 together have rather less than 30 million machines in the world). IF you can persuade 1 in 25 users to take 1 game from a catalogue of 21 you can sell roughly 3 million units. Time to create a Casual game: New say 1 to 2 years; with 5 to 20 staff. Games cost around 25 which is similar to AAA games.

Best selling one has been Pony Friends with 600,000 sales to March 2008. The worlds best in Nintendo dogs on DS with over 18 million. Company are also tackling a much wider consumer base (pre teen American girls upwards).

Casual Games can create same sales volume (s) with a shotgun effect, faster reloads, less expense, and less risk than AAA games. MORE BANGS FOR LESS BUCKS.

They may soon be making a meaningful contribution to SCis bottom line.

Industry Swimming in Cash as per this report from the Los Angeles Times on 3 big American publishers.

Activision Blizzard's quarterly profit doubles

Sales rise 32% for the Santa Monica-based video game maker. Rivals THQ and Electronic Arts post losses.

By Alex Pham, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 1, 2008

Activision Blizzard Inc. reported a strong profit for its fiscal first quarter Thursday, in contrast to losses posted earlier this week by its video game industry rivals THQ Inc. and Electronic Arts Inc.

Santa Monica-based Activision said net income doubled to $59 million, or 18 cents a share. Sales rose 32% to $654.2 million on the strength of its Kung Fu Panda game and two new titles based on its Guitar Hero franchise.
Activision merged with Vivendi Games on July 9, but the reported financial results applied only to Activision because the quarter ended June 30.

Calabasas-based THQ, known for its WWE wrestling games, also saw sales rise 32%, to $137.6 million, in its fiscal first quarter reported Wednesday, but it posted a loss of $27.2 million, or 41 cents a share. That was wider than the loss of $9.3 million, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier.

Redwood City, Calif.-based EA said revenue more than doubled to $804 million, but it still recorded a loss of $95 million, or 30 cents a share. EA also disclosed that advance customer orders for its upcoming Madden Football game, a key franchise, had been lower than last year.

All three game companies projected losses for the current quarter, even though game software sales are poised to grow 24% this year, according to projections from Wedbush Morgan Securities.

If the video game business is doing so well, then why isn't everyone swimming in profits?

"It's a seasonal business," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan.

As much as three-quarters of the industry's sales occur during the holidays. But companies still must pay overhead costs during quarters when they're not releasing as many games, he said.

Activision's projected loss this quarter will be exacerbated by the cost of consolidating with Vivendi's game business. The combined company's shares gained 20 cents in regular trading to $35.98 but fell 73 cents to $35.25 in after-hours trading after the earnings release.

In subsequent quarters, however, Activision expects to benefit from World of Warcraft, a Vivendi title with more than 10.9 million subscribers who pay monthly fees to play the online game.

"World of Warcraft has a steady revenue stream that will help smooth out earnings for Activision," Pachter said.

The title will get a big boost this year when Vivendi's Blizzard Entertainment releases World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

Mike Morhaime, Blizzard's chief executive, said the Irvine developer was working on a brand-new online game, as well as fresh installments of its Diablo and Starcraft franchises.

Extracts from UBISofts Press Release 24th July 08

They show European Video Game company having increased sales 26% roughly in proportion to US reports. They also show an increasing attention to DS sales. Extracts from their press release are shown below.

"Ubisoft reports first-quarter 2008-09 sales

Sales
Sales for the first quarter of 2008-09 came to 169 million, up 25.8%, or 33.0% at constant exchange rates, compared with the 134 million recorded for the same period of 2007-08.

Guidance raised for 2008-09 full-year sales Ubisoft is raising its guidance for full-year 2008-09 sales to approximately 1.02 billion from the previously-announced 1 billion as a result of the following factors: favorable market conditions for the video games industry, the Groups solid first-quarter sales performance (particularly by the Games For Everyone range), and the positive reception given to the games resented at E3.

For Comparison with SCi Entertainment

Using exchange rate 1.00 = 0.80
Quarterly earnings for UBIsoft were circa 135m v estimated 30m for SEG. SEG game new release program was at the end of the period. My estimate for SEG in this quarter is 40m and Oct to Dec 80m.

The release pattern, allowing for different sizes of companies, is similar. That is they are targeting similar customers

Comment:- SEG are in a GROWTH market using the sales figures for 3 US and 1 European.
The new releases are on the GROWTH platforms using UBIsoft data.
Company appears to be on the path for GROWTH.

In a recent trawl through Retailers Web sites I found this list of Eidos games soon to be released by retailers. I have added some future dates released by the company.

The number of new releases for each platform for the current HALF year is more than the TOTAL for LAST year. If quality continues then it should be a cracking half year.

dealerdear - 17 Feb 2009 09:57 - 9 of 12

anybody know whats happened to this company? I have it on my stockwatch and it's at zero. I wasn't aware that it had been taken over or gone bust. all news info has gone as well.

Did it change it's name?

dealerdear - 17 Feb 2009 10:02 - 10 of 12

i'm answering my own question.
I suspect it is now Eidos, perhaps ..

Stan - 17 Feb 2009 10:17 - 11 of 12

I thought that SCI bought Eidos about 3 years back, and then got into trouble. I lost interest in them after that.

dealerdear - 17 Feb 2009 11:55 - 12 of 12

That was what I thought but Eidos seem to be around now which is why I am somewhat confused.
