The AI. saga makes me wonder if there would be any value in a thread suggesting warning signs of possible company ill-health. In their case it was regular and often substantial cash outflows, which at best puts the business at the mercy of its lenders and at worst suggests something elsewhere is seriously wrong. In the case of AI, this looks to have been overstatement of value of stocks. I am a sad case who enjoys reading Annual Reports and Accounts (or more particularly the notes which give much more detail). Cash flow statement is always the first to be examined and painful experience has taught me not to invest in businesses which do not generate cash at the operating level. Other things to look for are outstanding debtor days relative to sales (if going up, is there a good reason, or could there be a big bad debt lurking) and stock levels relative to sales - possible unsaleable items.
Any other ideas - apart from personalised number plates, fishtanks in reception, flagpoles and too many left handers on the Board?
