RIP Sir Henry Cooper OBE

ExecLine - 01 May 2011 22:17

Henry Cooper, the British Heavyweight boxer who was famous for putting Cassius Clay (Mohammed Ali) on the deck and nearly winning the Heavyweight Boxing World Championship Title, has died today, aged 76.

Our 'Enry had a fantastic left hook, which was nicknamed 'Enry's Ammer'.

I remember the Clay fight in 1963 and Henry putting his opponent down for what looked like a potential knockout, just at the end of the 4th round.

Clay took the break at the bell to recover from the punch and when he came back he gave 'Our 'Enry' a nasty cut above his left eye. With the blood streaming down his face and affecting his vision, Henry Cooper was forced to stop by the referee and Clay retained the title.

At that time, Cassius Clay, as Ali was then called, was a real loud mouth, and it would have been a really desirable and marvellous feat for British Boxing if Cooper had have been able to shut Clay up a bit and put him on the deck with a knockout punch to win the Championship. Nearly....but just not quite!

Henry Cooper...'Our Hero!' who fought so well!

The British people were totally saddened. Copper was such a fantastic boxer and, with his typical 'sarf London' accent, was a terrific personality too. So much so, that he won the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year for two years on the trot.

He also had a lovely lady wife, called Albina, whom he lost not too long ago. It is believed that, having lost her, Henry just died of a broken heart.

Yes. Thank you for those exciting and most pleasurable moments 'Enry. I personally, will remember you and your fights with great fondness and pleasure (and with sadness, I'll also curse your easily cut eye-brows too). :-)
