Our survey said:
70% of our users trade UK shares at least once a week with over 50% of our users trading shares more than once a day.
Of those trading every day, 50% said they carried out 8 trades or more trades per day, the highest total being 60 trades a day. We were interested also to find out the value of stocks traded in an average week, the range was from less than 5,000 up to 5,000,000, with 47% saying they traded stocks to the value of 100,000 more.
The most popular type of stocks traded were those in the FTSE 100 with 58% saying this was their first choice, followed by Small Caps, Ftse250, Techmark , Aim and then Ofex.
Asked if they prefer SETS or SEAQ stocks, 85% preferred SETS stocks. Of those who did trade SEAQ stocks, 91% responded that the spreads were too wide.
We asked our users did they trade indices. The majority were active indices traders and 39% said they traded them at least once a day. Of those surveyed the top chose to trade the FTSE indices with 64% saying this was there most actively traded indices, with the US indices second with 34% saying they traded them, followed by a handful who traded European indices.
There are a number of ways of being invested in the markets or trading and we were keen to ascertain whether our users were cash investors/traders or if there preferred derivative such as CFD or spread betting products. Nearly 70% responded to say they only used CFDs or spread betting (42% spread betting and 27% CFDs).
Looking at market volatility, it has been widely accepted that the most volatile times of day are at opening and closing of markets. We were interested to find out the periods during the day when our users preferred to trade. The majority actually considered quite small windows of opportunity with the most popular specific time from 8am to 9am , the majority preferring various timescale from 7am to 10am. Oddly enough very few actually traded the last hour in the day.
Bulletin Boards are always an interesting area for the active investor/trader and we asked our users if they found them a help or a hindrance, in fact 100% said they were a help . Of these 50% used the bbs for camaraderie, 20% for tips and 30% for both.
As an on-line business we are always interested to know some details about online usage particular to online trading and investing. The responses we received pointed to the fact that on average 80% of our users are online looking at share information or trading for 3 or more hours per day and 20% are online for 10 or more hours.
