Trading Thoughts chart.gifSunday 23rd March

The current geopolitical are taking precedence over the economic fundamentals at the present time. The relief rally is full flow and has had enough momentum to take it through the long term downtrend resistance line. The direction from here will no doubt be dominated by the news for Iraq and a quick victory could add 500 points to the FTSE. However like many others I am still convinced the bear trend is still in control and the current exuberance could quickly melt away with a return of the markets to the long-term downtrend.

Next week the retail sector will be highlighted with results and trading statements.

On Monday Online travel agent ebookers should show a further reduction in its full-year losses with the house broker expecting the figure to have reduced to 5.2m from the 20m seen a year earlier. However along with the rest of the travel industry a slump in current bookings may take the gloss off the figures. On Wednesday we will see how well Woolworths recovery plan has been working when they are expected to show profits up to 49m from 15m a year earlier. This follows improvements in stock control and overall improvements in operational performance.Thursday morning Next release finals.  They had earlier stated that all is well for its full-year performance so should report profits in the region of 293m to 303m. If this is confirmed it will shown it has recovered from late last year when it struggled to meet sales targets. The big question for Next is whether they can predict strong growth for the coming year through refurbishments & expansion Friday: Boots will be looking to once again surprise the market with a strong trading statement. Before Xmas they said they had the strongest pre-Christmas sales growth in 10 years. However I feel they may have a question mark on future growth with increased supermarket competition and cut price retailers for its health & beauty products. On Friday Sainsbury's issues its spring trading statement and should give us the latest news on its battle for Safeway. Trading over Christmas showed a growth of 2.8% followed by a steady January so no shocks are expected here. Thats if for me this week and now to enjoy the Spring sunshine.

As ever I look forward to reading your views and comments.

Wishing you all the best for next week.

Thanks for the thread Crocodile,
Having appraised the deteriorating newsflow from Iraq this weekend I'm beginning to wonder if the US may have bitten off more than it can chew in trying to promote a "user-media-civillian friendly" option. Technological evolution just hasn't come that far yet, it's either going to require some serious arty to root those hardcore-boys out of their bunkers or a very long seige. Personally prefer it to take a bit of time and see a few more lives spared, a lot of casualties appear to be occurring because of the external demands for a high-speed war.

Glad I'm still short BARC from 394 and likewise with BP. at 429.

mbbcat - 23 Mar 2003 22:39 - 6 of 10

just wonder how much the usa charged for the media rights?

Viva_Cohiba - 24 Mar 2003 08:40 - 8 of 10

Good morning Crocodile,
perhaps there'll be a few more people posting on this thread today, sorry but I don't have access to the traders thread. Looks like my bearish BARC and BP positions are already paying off. I'm looking for about 30 points off both over the next 2 days.

Crocodile - 24 Mar 2003 08:48 - 9 of 10

Saddams speech was typical, no substance. The only important thing is he mentioned something which was after the time he was supposed to have died. So still alive and kicking.
Viva I hope so, already at 8:45 have 55 posts on the traders board.
Covered PRU short for +8
