News Headlines:    US stocks: The Dow closed above 9,000 for the first time in 10 months Wednesday, while the S&P 500 saw its best close in 11 months and the Nasdaq hit its best close in a year, as investors seized on signs of strength in the services sector of the economy.

Somerfield said on Thursday it had received a conditional bid of 120 pence per share but said it undervalued the firm.

Boots:said its annual profits have slumped as it struggles to find the right balance between profit margins and sales in its core business. Its year profits before exceptionals fell 13 percent to 555.4 million pounds, in line with forecasts, after the disposal of Halfords

SSL: International the maker of Durex condoms, said on Thursday it rebounded to profit last year as it moved to focus on consumer healthcare.Profits were 39.1 million pounds after a 2.9 million pounds loss a year earlier.

Johnson Matthey: reported annual profits rose 3% at the top end of forecasts, and said market conditions would remain challenging in the current year. The world's largest distributor of platinum and related metals, which also produces catalysts to cut vehicle exhausts, said profits for the year rose to 192.5 million

Kelda, the owner of Yorkshire Water, unveiled pretax profit before exceptional items of 175.2 million pounds up from 162.7 million a year ago and beating analysts' forecasts and raised its dividend 2.2 percent to 26.05 pence.

Tate & Lyle reported an 18% rise in annual profit and said growth this year would depend on improving efficiency, cost cutting and boosting sales of branded products. They posted pre-tax profit of 228 million compared to analysts forecasts of 205-216 million pounds.
