IS CENSORSHIP KILLING THIS BB? (NEO)

The Bantam - 03 Jun 2003 11:11

Neo Anderson - 03 Jun'03 - 11:10 - 42 of 42 edit

Not a new post 'over there' since 9.44am.

Do you think our mate Bullshare is glad that he has banned me and gravy (and a few others)?

I think that debate adds to the vibrancy of a BB and Bullshare's harsh censorship of his own BB is killing it IMO.

Until he can stop this 'It's my football and I'll have my way' attitude that BB will slowly disintergrate IMO. I suppose that the tumbleweed effect is a symptom of the level of censorship that goes on there.

Diogenes - 03 Jun 2003 11:30 - 2 of 48

Don't know why you were banned, Neo, but Gravy's main object in being here seemed to be to bait poor old Ainsoph, which is hardly the purpose of this BB (imo, dyor).

Andy - 03 Jun 2003 14:51 - 3 of 48

diogenes,

Agree completely.

NEO,

some of those banned just wanted to trash this BB, and turn it into their own personal battleground, as you very well know.

Mike did the right thing, lack of interest in the markets is killing BB's, not censorship!

You are right about ADVFN having "vibrancy". but most posts there are none share related now.

Not too many quality share related posts on any BB at the moment, IMHO.

regards,

Andy.

PS i post on most BB's , and have noticed a drop off all round, and censorship prevails at iii, financebb, and sardinesplaice.com!

Densil - 03 Jun 2003 15:04 - 4 of 48

I think they did the right thing. You may call it censorship but there was very little share related content to your posts, mostly harrasment.
You want to champion the right to be abusive it seems to me.
A pity they couldn't find a less sledgehammer way of controlling and removing the spam you create like iii did this morning.
Bullshare is obviously all too aware that it's a mistake to confuse quantity with quality.
It may take longer to build up a decent client base but given that ampleiii is rumoured to be struggling financially, Bullshare may well wake up soon and find them arriving provided he keeps hold of the reins here.

Crocodile - 03 Jun 2003 16:49 - 5 of 48

There are several moderators on AM. Bullshare is only one of 6 and as far as I know and they do have to make a group decision.
The Investors room is better off without the posters who devote most of their time to arguing rather than making constructive posts. Many traders I have spoken to were initially dissuaded from joining am by their actions.

Slacker - 03 Jun 2003 17:31 - 6 of 48

Well done Bullshare
I for one had virtually given up using this BB because of all the bitching surrounding Ainsoph. I will give it a second chance now.

Socrates - 03 Jun 2003 17:31 - 7 of 48

I prefer a moderated site. I look at financial BB's to find advice, reasoned opinion and information.

Insults and abuse I can do without. Aggressive posts I can do without. advfn is a particular case where I have seen posters literally driven off of threads by such people.

Keep up the good work, I don't call it censorship. I'd rather think of it as maintaining a little discipline.

Cassis - 03 Jun 2003 17:33 - 8 of 48

Andy.

There are a great many good posts on ADVFN and there is also room for the nonsense.

As a newcomer to this site I notice that there is very little levity here, but on the plus side I haven't seen much aggression. I suppose that this puts this site in the middle-ground with little of note actually going on.

I thought that iii was quiet but this is really quiet. I think that there is always room for nonsense, as long as it doesn't interfere with the more serious threads.

Good Luck.

Cassy

Slacker - 03 Jun 2003 20:06 - 11 of 48

Bullshare
I have just read a post of yours on the TAD thread which suggested that you have the ability to detect posters using multiple 'aliases'.
If this is true could you not have a thread to 'name and shame' the offenders. I would of thought that this would stamp it out and give the BB an edge over some of its competitors.

hilary - 03 Jun 2003 20:18 - 12 of 48

Sniffer,

Methinks you've shot yourself in the foot with post 8.

You've produced a great long list of ADVFN threads, but look at the numbers on the right hand side. The only thread that you seem to have looked at in any great detail is the Our Tone's a twat thread. Hardly stock related.

:-))

Cassis - 03 Jun 2003 20:53 - 13 of 48

There chirps happy hilary.

Political discussion has always interested me, Infact I think that current affairs is a healthy indicator of democracy. And I think that capitalism can only exist in a democracy, other political structures are either state/individual regarding the split of the GNP.

Without debate there is only one line. Nothing gets added to the boiling-pot of life without some form of experimentation/innovation. It is impossible that we would naturally agree with anyone for 100% of the time.

By taking sides or trying to please a few you will turn away the many.

Sequestor - 03 Jun 2003 21:15 - 14 of 48

er
"by taking sides and pleasing the majority you will turn away the few prats" sounds less like polit-speak, and more like the truth, and it has worked too,
ramps reduced by 95% I would guess, insults from the chief ramper by ditto, `noise`reduced by 85% result, bliss!!!!

oh and the quote "capitalism can only exist in a democracy" is worth a
ROTFLMCO

Haystack - 03 Jun 2003 21:43 - 15 of 48

Slacker
I think that naming and shaming people with multiple aliases would just create more aggro. and prolong the problems. It is sufficient that AM can find them and control the problem. I don't think we should get involved in the mechanics of the process. I am just happy that a lot of the nonsense has stopped. Ainsoph was not the complete cause of the troubles. He was attacked constantly by a few posters. However, he did bring some of that on himself and when attacked, he did seem incapable of just ignoring it.

Cassis - 03 Jun 2003 21:54 - 16 of 48

From iii regarding iii.

I wonder if this is why ADVFN have all the posters.

Did this bb really stop @16.54 or is the Censor at work again?
I find it abominable that posters are treated as children to be cut off in mid sentence by self imposed do- gooders.
I have watched this bb, and been registered on it for many years, trying to post even a mild expletive is now censorable, no wonder the content is so weak.
I suggest the management take a close look at their act , and decide if they want a Mothers Union chat show, or a grown up discussion forum- come to think the former would probably not censor the word fcuk these days- hopeless.

That Curry is a serial thread starter! But note the amount of posts to this thread...nearly 11k, and thats just the main thread.

I dont know what is wrong here, perhaps it is the censorship as Neo suggests. But it would appear to need some "enlivening" or its going to go pop!

There simply aint enough posters of any type....full stop!!

superrod - 03 Jun 2003 22:02 - 18 of 48

i am rapidly coming to the opinion that anything should be acceptable and its up to individual posters to decide who to filter. ( sorry SQUELCH )

Cassis - 03 Jun 2003 22:07 - 19 of 48

Aye.

Completely agree.

If you shut people up you're only listening to part of the story.

I'm honestly thinking of starting a truely uncensored BB. The mechanics are simple, take this one, it's virtually off the shelf. It is simple to do.

Night Campers.....LOL & aye maxk (Hows the house? ;-) )

Haystack - 03 Jun 2003 22:14 - 20 of 48

This is not a matter of free speech. Free speech has no existence here. If we imagine that this is a bar in a pub that we frequent then the rules are pretty similar. The occasional harsh word or bit of aggro is alright. If behaviour goes beyond the bounds of what is acceptable to most of the other drinkers and the publican in particular, then the guilty party or parties will be asked to moderate their language or behaviour. If this approach does not work then they would expect to be banned form the pub. I am sure that most of us would see that as fair. Why should we accept a poorer standard of behaviour here?

MaxK - 03 Jun 2003 22:29 - 21 of 48

Cassis,

which one?

lol !
