Britons would like to see footballer David Beckham on their banknotes, according to a survey.


Real Madrid's new player came top in the poll, released to coincide with the last day of author Charles Dickens' stint on the back of the 10 note. He is being replaced by scientist Charles Darwin.

World War II leader Winston Churchill was another favorite for a banknote place, but current Prime Minister Tony Blair was the least wanted, according to the poll for Virgin Money.

Beckham's wife Victoria could not match her husband's popularity, being named the fifth most unwanted banknote face.

More than a quarter of those surveyed thought existing banknote figures such as composer Edward Elgar and Victorian social reformer Elizabeth Fry were irrelevant and should be replaced with sexy celebrities and modern-day British heroes.
