which smart chips are you talking about? there have been for quite some time now the small chip on the front of the card in addition to the magnetic stripe at the back. Are these one and the same? or a new type all together?

According to bbc2 ceefax a new card with a smart chip has been on test in nottingham for the past 3 months and is now to be rolled out across the uk asap - they wxpect 1/5th of all cards to be replaced by christmas.
the new card contains more data and is believed to be much more difficult so skim/copy and i think customers will need to key a pin number when making transactions.
I wondered who manufacturers these cards - must be a big future in this area and how will this effect the likes of retail decisions? will there technology be needed in the future?
