Woolworths (Pick & Mix) (WLW)

blakester - 17 Oct 2003 17:55

Any thoughts on this old dinosaur? I have a small holding but am looking to top up ahead of the dividend date and Christmas sales. However there seems some resistance around 47p thats making me wonder whether its gonna go anywhere soon...

Even with a new broom in the Directors room still the same old mess on the floor. The only high street retailer to have got the pick and mix right as far as I tell is Mother Care.

I'm a fan of WLW - for a start I spend enough money in there on kids choc. etc at Xmas that owning shares is a sensible move anyway! The place always has people in it, when did you ever see an empty Woolies especially before Xmas??

They do admittedly have a way to go yet and there is more work to do, but there's a couple of factors worth bearing in mind.
1. EUK is part of the group - it supplies CD's etc to many high street players such as Tesco and gives WLW the ability to get some revenue from sales they don't even make themselves if you think about it due to supplying the goods.

2. They own MVC which agreed is not the more exciting place on the high street but does mean there's other real estate to flog off if they chose to reduce overheads and re-organise.

3. The picture is getting better rather than worse for the company, it is a recovery play but of course how long that will take and if it will prove successful are both unknowns.

4. Xmas is around the corner and a better picture of profits should be known after that period - forecasts are that across the board this may be a busy retailing Xmas.

The shares has gone up since March really well,it's about 40% I think, so some slowing down is inevitible. Do what you think is right for you, personally I am going to hold on into 2004 having bought in at 34p earlier this year, that's a fair profit already and currently I don't see any reason for that to collapse.

I heard there was some stakebuilding going on in Woolies - anyone confirm that?

Red Underwing - 20 Oct 2003 13:54 - 5 of 15

I think there may be a revival in the offing for the WLW share price!

But I think it may drop to 46 or lower before that happens! So I'm not jumping in as yet!

Peaks in Dec don't look unusual....

blakester - 19 Dec 2003 15:37 - 10 of 15

Was 3p, now 2p - not bad I suppose but it was bound to go up today with the amount of out of hours trading going on last night. I heard the price target is now 55p

blakester - 23 Dec 2003 17:12 - 11 of 15

Nearly double buys/sells yet a drop of .25p, any thoughts?

stockbunny - 24 Dec 2003 09:53 - 12 of 15

I'm holding WLW for a while yet - but follow your own thoughts
on when you call it a day. There seems to be room for a rise
beyond current levels IMHO

Short term vibes from the retail sector are poor at the moment...this is backed up by Woolworths saying that they will not be issuing a business progress update until their interim in January.
Maybe they are hoping that we all spend with a last minute rush and they may be better placed in a couple of weeks.
The longer term for Woolies looks ok, and there is also someone building up a good stake in them.

sinutab - 28 Dec 2003 12:10 - 14 of 15

i hear this may be takeover target in new year.

anyone also hear.

Boss behind Big W stores has gone - report in Daily Mail today
just under write up on MKS.
Views...
Will they get rid of the Big W stores?
If there is any hope of someone like WolMart buying a piece
of them these stores need to be available to buy. The standard high street
ones are unlikely to appeal to a mega-retailer like that.
