Verification [verify124@halifax.co.uk] - Fraud? (HBOS)

little woman - 25 Oct 2003 20:23

I've just received the following e-mail:

Dear Halifax Bank Member,

This email was sent by the Halifax server to verify your e-mail
address. You must complete this process by clicking on the link
below and entering in the small window your Halifax username and password.
This is done for your protection --- because some of our members no longer have access to their email addresses and
we must verify it.

To verify your e-mail address and access your bank account,
click on the link below. If nothing happens when you click on the
link (or if you use AOL), copy and paste the link into
the address bar of your web browser.

Thank you for using Halifax!

Do not reply to this email.

The thing is, they didn't send it to the e-mail address the Halifax has to me, but another one simular to it, that I have. Also this e-mail was sent early tommorrow morning! The Halifax site is not accessable, and you can't ring them. If you follow the link, they ask you to verify all your personal details to access the account.

I think this is the same Fraud that Nat West account holders got hit with last week! Anyone else agree?

yes ..... i think so. The fake e-mail around all the internet banking. Halifax, Barcalys. ...

arkwright - 25 Oct 2003 20:38 - 3 of 9

Never reply to emails asking for usernames and passwords, unless of course you want your bank account raided.!!

overgrowth - 25 Oct 2003 20:47 - 4 of 9

Defintely so. I've checked out the html behind the window which doesn't point the form's contents at anything remotely connected with the Halifax. It's just a popup "trojan horse" laid on top of the standard Halifax home page.

If you type in Mickey Mouse details and click verify, all it does is write what you've typed in to a database on a web site in Australia (to be used for unscrupulous means).

You should never have to supply passwords or verify them to anyone. All secure sites and systems don't even know what your password is, this is why if you forget it they can't tell you what the original one was - and after various steps to check your mother's maiden name etc. you can set up a new password.

ckmtang - 25 Oct 2003 21:24 - 5 of 9

i don1t think it worth to type it anything. because they may get your IP address and hack to your PC. So just leave it.

MightyMicro - 26 Oct 2003 09:58 - 6 of 9

All this sort of stuff is crap. Throw it away or forward it to abuse@barclays.com or whoever and let them deal with it.

Never give anybody anything on the net unless it is by a secure server wih a pre-agreed password that you have already supplied. They NEVER need to ask for your password or "account details" if you think about it.

I had one of these too this am - and I dont even bank with the Halifax.

I do bank with Barclays, and I was targeted by the Barclays scam mail a few weeks back.

Beginning to feel a bit paranoid!!

They are updating the site I think because of the fraud....

This is the e-mail I received today:

If you are a Halifax or Bank of Scotland customer and you have already received, or receive such an email in the future, please forward this to onlineemailinvestigations@hbosplc.com and then delete it immediately without responding or visiting any site it details.
