Shares that can be traded in an ISA for the longer term (ISA)

Fundamentalist - 15 Jan 2004 19:56

I dare say I am not alone in trading my own self-select ISA and thought it would be good to share some ideas. It is becoming aware to me that the majority of threads relate to shares that are not available in an ISA (ie Aim Stocks) or are short term opportunities. Hence I thought I would start a thread for longer term investments that can be held in an ISA.

I currently hold Retail Decisions (RTD), Skyepharma (SKP) and Dana Petroleum (DNX) within my ISA along with some cash which I am looking for a home for.

What do others hold in their ISAs, any recommendations? any opinions on my holdings (except RTD which has been discussed on this site at length)

nice idea for thread! Glad someone wants to talk about "normal" shares - AIMshares are too risky.

Good place to look is www.frequenttrader.info - written by the chap that writes about pensions for the sunday times - he only buys shares for his isa so aim stocks are not discussed

picked up a few good trading ideas from this site including my biggest grower Vanco - bought at 2 pounds, now at 340.

Thanks i will have a look at that site and also a look at Vanco. What else do you hold in your ISA renegade?

renegade - 15 Jan 2004 22:41 - 4 of 30

My favourites are RTD - had since 9p - TEP, amazing share just keeps going up, dividend too, cosalt - good steady riser, Big Yellow for bid possibilties and PAtientline.

Nnow got nearly 40,000 in Isas, all growing tax free. I don't think traders realise how great isas are, I look on it as my pension. MOney grows tax free and I can take the money when I want.

WHat so you hold?

bit late for TEP, I missed that 1, everybody already knows how good the company is & most of it is in the price.

RTD still got more to come, trading statement was very good but official results in March will prove it.

& take a look at PTG

It seems that the assets may be worth 10 times more than the market cap so the shares should go up by 10 times or more.

Renegade - we hold Big Yellow in the investment club I'm in and have been tempted to buy myself - what are the bid possibilities? I have similiar amounts and a similar view to my ISA pot!!!

Apple - thanks for that, I'm aware that TEP has done well and gutted I didn't get in but am wary how much room for growth there is left, I agree RTD has plenty more to come, I'll have a look at PTG.

Frampton - 16 Jan 2004 09:39 - 7 of 30

DDT, TAD, CS. and DTM are doing well in my ISA

Fundamentalist, good thread. In the Traders room we have a similar thread where we are comparing (in an uncompetitive sense) our relative progress in increasing the value of our self select tax free wrappers. This has been going on since 1st August 2003.

FWIW my holdings are:
In profit: TFC, FIB, BIZ, BPRG
Just about in profit / breakeven: CASH
At a loss at the moment as I only bought today: THUS (Have been in & out of Thus previously - sold too soon on the recent run up.

Have made money on but sold too early the following - would still consider going in if the price was right:
HRN, CTM, HBOS, SGC, BSY, ITL, MRW, SFW

Have also taken losses in the past in HBOS, THUS, SGP, UKC, PXC (wish I'd held - sold in a manipulated drop off). All of the losses would have come good except SGP so am a little annoyed at myself for being so panicky. In this type of situation if your judgement is right you just have to get the timing right and wait...

Still have some cash looking for a home and one or two ideas currently running but don't want to pay full price for them so will update you if anything happens.

Fundamentalist - 21 Jan 2004 09:09 - 13 of 30

graham -thanks for that I'll have a look at ELH - i await with baited breath the other one as you are obviously very keen on it.

seymour- thanks for that, I have access to traders room so I will pop over and have a look at that thread (most of the threads over the there are too short term for me). 1 quick question - some of the shares you hold are aim listed - hence not tradeable in an ISA - are you using a SIPP or some other wrapper?

Seymour Clearly - 21 Jan 2004 12:33 - 14 of 30

Using a sipp, isa and pep (remember them?)

apple - 21 Jan 2004 12:45 - 15 of 30

BED should do well because Intel needs to by equipment from it for it's latest chip manufacturing process.

batman999 - 21 Jan 2004 13:05 - 17 of 30

Currently holding Tadpole Tech , Lupus Capital & Galliford Try (All in profit)

Ruthies Fund - 21 Jan 2004 17:43 - 18 of 30

Hi All
I like ISA's...don't like TAX
Started with the pension idea by putting money into funds; UK & Euro and some US
Am now considering a bit of a switch eastwards and would be interested in your thoughts.
Lately though I have been putting direct shareholdings into my ISA's...bit of a mixed bag though: LLOY (doing nicely )to SEO (as a punt which if it comes off will be very welcome when I retire in a few years)and DNX, DDT that kind of stuff.
I will look forward to reading this thread as you guys seem much more clued up than me.
Cheers (and a prosperous new year to all)
Ruthie

Ruthie - if you don't like tax have you thought about doing a SIPP - not only do you not pay tax, but the Tax man will contribute to it too!

Hi all,

as i am in the process of reviewing my ISA shares I thought i would renew this thread.

My current holdings (% of portfolio) and views are as follows:

RTD (33%) Current price 17.75p. Hopefully consolidating before another push upwards. Share price climbed excessively prior to results and has since fallen back. Long term prospects still very good with good growth forecast.

SKP (26%) Current price 67p. One of the three promised deals (Depomorphine) has been announced with two still awaited. Results have been pushed back until end of April, where by the two deals are expected. Last year results expected to be terrible and a possibility of a rights issue. I plan to exit if the deals are not announced and/or poor results and a rights issue.

DNX (16%) Current price 275p. Recently announced a great set of results. Now cash positive and trading on a current PE of just 12. Wide net of current exploration with Mauritania looking optimistic. Currently at the top of its trading range and looking to breakout.

PTG (8%) A company in turmoil having ousted the CEO Iny. They have brought in May ( a recovery specialist) who is yet to announce his proposals. Potential still remains of a break up but this is a highly risky share at present.

The remaining 17% is in cash currently and looking for a home as might well be the money I currently have in SKP.

The shares I am currently looking at are LOOK, BYG and GFRD. Any opinions on these greatfully received or any other growth stocks which people think have potential.

moggey70 - 20 Apr 2004 11:08 - 21 of 30
