Virus Warning Cat 4 (VIRU)

pericles - 27 Jan 2004 08:22

New virus worm which arrives as attachment see http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html

Fred1new - 21 Apr 2005 10:39 - 2 of 10

I have had chaos with one of my computers for 3-4 days. Started having repeated freezes and blue screens, May have been due to faulty network connection.

After repeated failures ran my usual virus blocker Antivir Guard. Spybot but had no evidence of problems.

( The other computer on net work was clean of viruses when repeated scan.)

Decided disconnect from network and reload Windows 2000 and Office and old Antivir. No problems.

Needed to update Windows and Antivir. Of course when I reconnected to network I went into MSN page, before going to direct to Antivir Guard update. Immediately offer anti-porn programme. Nosey had a look at it and decided not to download and then updated V. blocker.

Restarted computer and found antiporn programme raising its head immediately. Tried to get rid of it.

Ran virus blockers and found I had been stuffed with viruses Worms* 40 etc

Cleaned these out. Ran Virus checkers etc everything seemed OK.

Decided to obtain the 2000 updates. Down loaded Outlook Express first, that is when the fun started. Viruses worm, My-doom etc. poured in.

Still recovering.

I still wish further updates, but feel apprehensive about going MSN updates.

I am restoring Spybot as soon as my recent Virus scan finishes. Which is reporting ie4-s6.cab archive infected. Can I delete this file.

What is Heuristic/Virus Win32?

Never had problems like this before

Any suggestions? Polite ones please.

I sympathise fully with you Fred and don't know enough to help you, sorry!
I have a problem with two pop ups from Abbey and Barclays Stockbrokers which are not blocked by my pop up blocker and are seriously hampering me when using Digitallook and Sharecast.I feel like smashing the screen, which is most unusual for me.Can anyone help me with this problem as well as helping Fred...PLEEEESE
Thanks
Ethel

Ethel.
Below is a company I have used for hard and software a few times. Seem reliable and have a lot of popup blockers etc. Prices very reasonable.

offers@dabs.com

Have a look.

The other way is peruse the "give away" software on the computer magazine. I have used their popup blockers, Antivir and Spy ware programmes for yonks. Always been reliable up to now.

I think I have cleared my discs of viruses.

Now to reconnect to MSN for updates it crossed legs etc.

IMHO the two best FREE software utilities that you could ever want are:

For virus protection - AVG
As a firewal - ZoneAlarm

You can find them on the internet easy enough.

ZoneAlarm is particularly useful but can appear a bit daunting at first. It will detect every single program that trys to write to your pc (or for that matter, will identify those programs on your pc that are trying to access the internet with out you knowing). You have the option to block these programs, or set them to ask your permission first.

You will be amazed at how many programs are trying to access your pc each day, and how many programs you have that are trying to make connections to the outside world (usually spyware and other trackers).

Both programs regularly update themselves.

A word of warning about ZoneAlarm. Each time I want to print something to my printer on a shared LAN I first have to disable ZoneAlarm so that I am actually able to send a file. But this inconvenience is a small price to pay. To date (touch wood) I have never had a virus or similar on any pc that I have protected with these two pieces of software, even though I am joined to a large network where others have been infested.

Buy an Applemac machine.
What are viruses??????????.
cheers.

Fred1new - 21 Apr 2005 16:49 - 7 of 10

Porky, lend us some money and maybe I will.

But normally when I have had viruses on my machines I have been able to rid them fairly easily. This B Time every time I connect to the internet it takes me to a Page I have never seen before and dumps or attempts to dump a new load of "S---" before i have time to block it. I think I may have to start all over again with a reformat.

I use to feel a little amused about kids with viruses, at the moment I feel I would half kill them and feed them to the dogs.

Any body heard of this WARNING don't open it I just want information. """" Warning" I find I hit this page on the net www.drunkenrocket.com.gammon.co.htmm.

DON't go there i think it is part of my problems at the moment.

I agree with you about AVG

Fred1new - 21 Apr 2005 17:04 - 8 of 10

Just had look at internet setup and found that page had been changed to adware and power cleaner which was a page I was redirected to when I had reconnect to Internet before my problems started.

Might be useful to somebody for the future.

download.com for all free software from virus checker to firewall, would suggest
using mozilla instead of internet explorer, use AVG and SPYbot

Fred1new - 21 Apr 2005 17:33 - 10 of 10

Can anybody tell me what PowerScan.exe does?
