Where do I start?

amberjane - 19 Feb 2004 04:03

Just started with my first few shares & need help..... Which are best sites to use for info? Bought petra diamonds which are doing well but couldn't find any info as to why. which mags are best to subscribe to or is it better to sign up on line? Do I need a live tracker (and which one) as I get 15 mins delay. Who is it best (or cheapest) to trade through. So much to learn. Like high risk and can't hold them for long.

amberjane,

I would say that a small site called http://www.moneyam.com is fairly good for information, and could you do much better than to subscribe to the Shares Magazine?

Not that I am at all biased you understand :D

I agree. Have been trading small co. shares for years & already have most that are mentioned, so brilliant to read input from others. Only recently used MAM & am hooked. Also consider Techinvest.

Hi amberjane,

I'm a little concerned when you say, 'I can't hold them for long'.

Are you gambling with money that you need and can't afford to lose?
If so, perhaps a financial overhaul would be the be the first step
that gets rid of any interest paying debt before starting to speculate.

No offense intended, but your phrase rang a warning bell.

Melnibone.

Borrow a copy The Zulu Principle, and Beyond the Zulu Priciple by Jim Slater who I think also wrote an introduction to Inverstiing or Zulu Principle.

The books are readable and I think are a snsible method of valueing a company and therefore the basis of any investment.

Join this up with a litle chartism and and after some some luck you will be making some sensible decisopns if not all are profortable..

But the adavantage of Jime Slater's approach is that you will make less big and painful boobs.

Leave CFDs and Spreads for the others until you understand or can guess wha the market is likely to do.

Good Luck.

If you make millions remember me!!!!

Did I type all those spelling mistakes.

What about a Spell Checker.

Try hemscott site. Link below

http://infoex.hemscott.net/exchange2.htm

Has some interesting discussions. Found out about Bioprogress (BPRG) from there. Already made 700+

Also, just a general internet search through e.g. www.google.com can reveal several pointers.

Apparently there are rumours of a big diamond find and talks with a major player. The AGM is in the next few days (sometimes announcements are made unexpectedly at these get togethers).

Hi All,

Thanks for all your advice (and concern). Perhaps it was the time of morning (4.00am- I'm a night person) that my wording raised concerns on my finance. No immediate worries but had unpleasant exp at work & won 10k at tribunal. Can't face going back to work yet but need to take money out to live on. So the more I make the longer I stay off, bought Shares mag today, great & it mentnd my diamonds.......
Overgrowth, if you find out any more let me know.
Batman, thanks, I will stay up tonight & investigate.
Fred, will read the book thanks but if you've read it don't you already have
your own millions???
Tullett, OK OK I'll send off my subscription, it'll save having to get up early!

Take care with small companies, the spreads are huge and you can get stopped out at the wrong time, very high risk as well unless you do your research properly

amberjane - 19 Feb 2004 23:30 - 12 of 16

Research, yes but unfortunatley at the moment I don't know what all the jargon means. Been lucky with Danka & Petroceltic (liked the name!) so far but also hold Cytomyx!!! Saw it recmd somewhere but did no research so better start.

There is a good and relatively short guide to fundamentals at www.companyrefs.com - click on 'guide to refs'
Some of the stuff is specific to company refs sheets, but most of it is applicable across the board. There is also a short piece by Jim Slater. 'Be delighted to give you any info I can, but am not able to offer advice on specific shares. Good luck.

amberjane - 20 Feb 2004 12:54 - 14 of 16

Very pleased with Petra Diamonds today...glad I held on. But should I sell now or still hold? Have 4200 shares.

sniffer - 20 Feb 2004 13:42 - 15 of 16

The pre-eminent site in the UK is of course

http://www.advfn.com

Far quicker and more authoritive than any other site available.

sniff

hilary - 20 Feb 2004 13:44 - 16 of 16

I'd hold them, amberjane. Adonis is a diamond geezer.
