WATCH OUT!! another potential EBAy fraud

slmchow - 20 May 2004 14:37

I read someone got con on Ebay on a thread yesterday. The thread appears to be gone.

I just came across an ad on ebay with the exact same scam ('infomation only' in small print at the bottom) this time for an apple laptop.

SO WATCH OUT!!!!!

slmchow - 21 May 2004 14:46 - 2 of 12

Someone has not read the fine print and has bid up to 235 so far for information only

Iain - 21 May 2004 16:53 - 3 of 12

Here it is:

Ive become the victim of a fraud on EBay.
Basically I bid for a Sharp GX30 Which I won for 290 last Sunday. I paid immediately using Paypal. On the Tuesday I E-Mailed the seller asking when he was sending the phone. He said he was sending it 2nd class this was Wednesday. Today I received a registered letter from him. With a false return address on the back. I Checked the postcode and street. They dont exist. The letter contained a list of web-sites where I could get a phone for 20.

In the letter he has also printed off the original description and high lighted a sentence at the end I am selling information where you can get it for just 20.
Ive included the original description below.Ive contacted ebay/paypal/and Egg visa.
Any ideas where I stand before I try and hunt down Bharat Odedra who lives in Leicster, if thats his real name!
As you can see in this E-Mail I ask when PHONE is arriving
From: Bharat Odedra
Date: 05/14/04 11:46:01

I emailed ebay yesterday to ask them to take the advert off, I still have had no response. I also email BBC "watchdog" last night. Again still waiting for a response

Gausie - 21 May 2004 17:48 - 9 of 12

note the highest bidder's handle :o)

slmchow - 21 May 2004 18:17 - 10 of 12

yes I think it's .......

Check out the 'traders room' for the 'ebay fraud' thread

DocProc - 21 May 2004 22:39 - 11 of 12

You would need TWO BIDDERS to get a bid up to, say 10,000, to stuff the seller. Otherwise the one bid, no matter how high it is, would only go as high as it needs to go to actually win the bid.

Anyhow, to complain to eBay, there is the eBay "Community Watch" page to do it from:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/contact_inline/index.html

I would guess it is a

"Report a prohibited item or listing policy violation"

then

"Possible fraudulent listing"

then

"I didn't bid but I think a listing is fraudulent"

Hit "Continue"

then under the heading of "Contact Support"

Click on "E-Mail"

NB. Please allow up to 24 hours for a response.
In many cases, you will receive a response sooner.

Good Luck in shutting him down.

PS. eBay Rules and Policies and the list of violations are here:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/community/index.html

Importantly NOTE:

They also say:-

Please note that the above list is neither exhaustive nor restrictive. eBay reserves the right to delete any listing that may violate any legal provision or the general principles and values of the eBay community, even if the legal provision or principles and values are not explicitly stated on the site.

E-mail arrived from highest bidder on this item .He withdrew his bid.A Pyyric victory for me:-)
