Are the plates legal with that stuff on them?

overgrowth - 21 Apr 2004 01:14 - 4 of 14

snoball - I very much doubt it.

Whether cameras are installed as "revenue generators" or not, the simple fact remains that if you break the law by exceeding the speed limit, you run the risk of being caught by whatever means the law has at its disposal.

I bought a second hand car many years ago which came with number plate letters and numbers slightly thinner than the standard ones (the previous owner thought they were trendy). Sure enough, as I travelled to and from work, I was soon nabbed for "driving a motor vehicle with illegally installed registration plates" or something similar.

hijeff - 21 Apr 2004 07:51 - 5 of 14

thus far this is not illegal, but the law will ban its use soon enuf i'm sure, but it is undetectable to the eye.

torquay - 21 Apr 2004 09:20 - 6 of 14

Are you actually using coated plates and have these been tested by yourself to prove they work.
The worry as I see it is you've got to deliberatly break the speed limit to find out.

Andy - 21 Apr 2004 09:42 - 7 of 14

torquay,

I was thinking the same!

brianboru - 21 Apr 2004 09:49 - 8 of 14

Has anyone just binned and ignored the 'summons' that asks you to confirm that you were the driver (and in doing so forces you to give evidence against yourself) when you're caught by a speed box?

I know one person (who drives for a living) who's binned four and never heard a word afterwards - no fine nor points on licence - And one was for over double the 40 limit (at three in the morning). He's not registered on the electors register (refuses to fill the form in) so maybe that's a clue - He also thinks that they don't have enough staff to chase people who ignore them? Perhaps the costs of the chase are greater than the eventual fine and so they don't bother?

Overgrowth - Motor Vehicle Licensing regs stipulate (or used to) the exact dimensions (i.e. width/height/spacing etc) of the letters/numbers on a reg. plate. Sounds as if yours were not "thick" enough & this is what you were done for.

hijeff - 24 Apr 2004 14:24 - 10 of 14

i have nothing to do with the company selling this spray, the web site shows news coverage of reports on the product.you pays yer money or dont.however it can be bought cheaper on ebay.lol

CautiousCol - 25 Apr 2004 09:20 - 11 of 14

My personal point of view is if you are caught speeding by these cameras you were driving without due care and attention, so deserve it. If you can't see flourescent yellow cameras at the side of the road who says you can see a child? You are a danger, you should not in any way be speeding .

I don't know what's fact or fiction, but are there not digital cameras now that no longer use flash. The cameras that record numbers for the London conjestion charge?? Gantry cameras on the M6 checking your average speed between two points miles apart??

You pays your money and takes your choice.

Andy - 25 Apr 2004 12:28 - 12 of 14

Col,

Agree to a point, but some cameras are hidden behind signs and lamp posts, such as the ones on the A40 near Acton!

And nearby, there is a speed camera by a SCHOOL that is HIDDEN behind a TREE - COMPLETELY hIDDEN!

what does that tell you about the priority there?

Is the priority the safety of teh children?
Or the revenue?

Scripophilist - 25 Apr 2004 21:09 - 13 of 14

I would appear they have sprayed the logo plate as well as that is showing a lot of glare, either that or they image has been "enhanced".
