Fred1new - 31 Oct 2004 17:08

Any punters living in Birmingham Area interested in a Pie, Pint and jaw, one evening in a pub in Birmingham area.
Personally interested in small time investing(gambling), developing an appetite for CFDs. Also developing an interest in Charting or TA.

Andy - 31 Oct 2004 20:28 - 2 of 1427

Fred,

Good idea, hope you have some response.

aldwickk - 31 Oct 2004 21:04 - 3 of 1427

Fred.
I hope you still hold BPK, now that the mm's have filled that huge buy order,a 7% holding in the company it is up hill from now on ,see how different the price is moving even on low volume.

Fred1new - 31 Oct 2004 23:52 - 4 of 1427

Main Holdings at the moment are below
Telecom plus PLC
Retail Decisions PLC
BioProgress PLC
Trafficmaster PLC
Parity Group PLC
Amstrad PLC (I think this is dropping due to Sugar, Bland and another director selling options) With the results I think this should rebound.
Cardpoint PLC
Bespak PLC
Biocompatibles International PLC
Celsis International PLC
Alizyme PLC
Spirent PLC
Kewill Systems PLC
Scott Tod PLC
Oxford BioMedica PLC
TIBCO (American) Result of Staffware takeover. (Doing nicely)
Wolfson Microelectronics PLC (I think drop is overdone, Techinvest has some information suggerting the same, but won't buy any more unless further price drop or chnage of trend.
Altrix Healthcare plc
Imagination Technologies Group PLC
Vitec Group (The) PLC

Have few more but mainly Dogs without leashes!!!!

Fred1new - 31 Oct 2004 23:58 - 5 of 1427

alldwick Have noticed BPK volumes going up. (Not at their previous highest volumes but quite decent. I would take the majority of them to be buys from minor price movement. But it would be nice to see a decent recovery. May have to wait until new factory is functioning.

aldwickk - 01 Nov 2004 07:23 - 6 of 1427

Fred.
My top holdings are.

Bespak
Firestone diamonds
Trans-Sibrian gold

The rest of my portfolio are all mining & oil&gas stocks, i thing your portfolio should be 25%+,Small to mid cap Gold and Oil&gas stocks, does anybody have a view on this? [ and diamonds].

Fred1new - 01 Nov 2004 10:38 - 7 of 1427

I think you may be right about balancing my portfolio. It is not well balanced in the way the pundits say it should be.

But I try to stick to companies of which I think I have a little understanding of their potential. I seem to have holdings mainly in Techs, Telecommunication, Support, Biotechs, Pharmaceuticals, medical, software etc, I seem to shy away from certain sectors.

I think oil, gas, mining and building and construction are the shares of the moment and would like to have been in 12 months ago.

From a mining background I have always been apprehensive about loaded opinions about what came out of a hole in the ground, sometimes just after it was put there in the first place. (Difficult to believe some reports.) I have the same feelings about building and construction companies as well.) I think I will wait until the next cycle before committing cash to mining, construction work or oil industry them. Probably wrong. Also dont understand that much about the economy, and political and legal system of this country, for me to start gambling at a distance on management at a distance, with my money at even greater distance seems one step to far. There are enough shares going up and down at the same rates in UK as on American, Australian, South African markets etc. It is finding those which is the difficulty.

Hopefully, I will remember the cycle next time round.

aldwickk - 01 Nov 2004 13:19 - 8 of 1427

Fred.
I also deal with Barclays stockbrokers and have opened a spread bet account with IGINDEX last week, they have a very good web site, if you deal in AIM shares the margin is 25%, i find that it is cheaper then CFD's if you deal in small amounts. Regards Barclays they told me that if you deal 10 CFD's trades you will get free level 2, but its not free what ever number of trades you do if its a stright forward stock purchase ,which i told them that it seemed a bit unfair .

Fred1new - 02 Nov 2004 08:46 - 9 of 1427

I never thought Birmingham was an alochol free zone. OK no pie.

aldwickk - 02 Nov 2004 09:54 - 10 of 1427

Fred.

Do you come from a coal mining background as my dad use to work at the old Arley mine near Nuneaten.

Fred1new - 02 Nov 2004 13:28 - 11 of 1427

Yep, But from South Wales. My father started as boy underground and worked for 50 years retiring from the same "pit" as started. I even worked underground during parts of my student holidays. Thousands of years ago.

Not much interest in pints, pies and shares.

Fred1new - 03 Nov 2004 18:57 - 12 of 1427

Aldwickk. Are you usinf any software packages to monitor your shares? If yes, Which.

aldwickk - 03 Nov 2004 22:46 - 13 of 1427

No Fred i don't.

Andy - 04 Nov 2004 01:18 - 14 of 1427

Fred,

Quite hard to get these thing going, we tried in Bournemouth too, and not much response.

We are still trying, and next month hope to have a 4 person meeting, to try and start something up, but nothing is conformed yet.

I intend to keep trying until we have a decent group, it will happen one day.

G0WMH - 04 Nov 2004 01:44 - 15 of 1427

Fred, I live in Coventry and would welcome the chance for a chat sometime.
I mostly trade the FTSE, DOW and BARC, usually holding for a few days if I can catch them right.

Martini
Thank you.
Didn't Realise that there was a thread already. Thought of starting one before I went on holidays and missed the one already started.
I will contact.

For the others interested I copy the initial posting. Others have suggested something similar more central Birmingham. Or perhaps a hotel just off a motor way.

======================================================
"We are a group of people who currently meet bimonthly at the Manor Hotel, Meriden (on the B4102 almost opposite thee duck pond).
See http://www.manorhotelmeriden.co.uk/
Meriden is half way between Birmingham and Coventry.

Our numbers have gradually declined over the past several months and we are now down to four. We would like to invite any Moneyamrs in the area to come along to our meetings. We currently meet mid week from 7.30 PM; there is no charge.
We discuss the outlook for the $, SPX, FTSE, metals and bonds. We look at things from a fundamental and chart view (including point & figure). We also discuss individual stocks, but tend to concentrate more on the big picture. There is no fixed agenda and discussion follows peoples current interests and concerns.
If you are at all interested then post a message below. I hope to have the next meeting at the end on Nov.

Regards Schober

Stan - 04 Nov 2004 14:54 - 18 of 1427

Just seen this Fred, and depending on time etc i would have been interested in a meeting in the centre of Birmingham.

Regards

Stan.

Fred1new - 04 Nov 2004 15:25 - 19 of 1427

I hope to go to MANOR house on 16th Nov. If so I will update this thread. I think there is some interest in the Birmingham area but I don't really know.

Stan - 04 Nov 2004 16:12 - 20 of 1427

Disappointed that the "Midlands" (which is a region) meeting is being held in what looks like a place off of the 4102 (Meriden) therefore possibly excluding others from other areas around Brum and restricting them to the car.

Anyway Fred have a good meet and look foreward to further posts.

Regards

Stan.

Stan - 24 Nov 2004 17:00 - 21 of 1427

I've returned your email Fred and wonder If you have received It.
