UK blue-chips are expected to open lower this morning, led down by index heavyweight BP, following a blast at its Texas oil refinery last night, while an unconvincing session on Wall Street last night could also weigh, dealers said.
According to spread-betting firm IG Index, the FTSE 100 index is seen opening 10 points lower at 4,900 after closing at 4,910.4 yesterday.
On Wall Street last night, US stocks closed slightly lower as investors continued to digest Tuesday's rate hike and cautious economic outlook by the Federal Reserve, traders noted.
Across Asia overnight, the Nikkei 225 index closed 6.85 points higher at 11,745.97, while the Hang Seng ended its morning session 41.42 points lower at 13,562.19.
In the UK today, BP looks like suffering in early deals following an explosion last night at the group's Texas refinery, killing at least 14 people and injuring over 70.
The plant is the third largest in the US and produces nearly half a million barrels of crude oil a day, almost one third of the group's US output.
Oil prices eased in Asian trade however, as speculators cashed in on strong US inventory levels, discounting news of a big blast at a BP refinery in the US, dealers said.
According to Department of Energy data released last night, crude oil supplies in the week to March 18 were up 4.1 mln barrels to 309.3 mln, the highest inventory level in three years.
Elsewhere, the retail sector looks like remaining in focus, with Sainsbury due to issue a trading update amid hopes that new CEO Justin King and his team are beginning to have a positive effect on sales.
The ailing food retailer, recently touted as a potential takeover target, showed signs of a recovery back in December.
Elsewhere, London Stock Exchange is also due to issue a trading statement and investors will be keen to hear of any further developments in its takeover saga.
Meanwhile, National Grid Transco is also due to update on trading.
Among smaller companies, Digital Classics, Tenon are due to post interims, while Hardy Underwriting and Premier Oil are scheduled to report full year figures.
