Miner Matt strikes £5m gold with float

Mar 26, 2005 (Daily Mail - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Former miner Matt Sutcliffe has struck gold at the tender age of 38.

His 8pc stake in Alexander Mining will be worth about 5m when shares of the international copper, gold and silver mining exploration company start trading on Aim on April 4.

Broker Evolution Securities raised 20m by placing 66.7m shares at 30p with institutional investors. It was heavily oversubscribed, suggesting that the stock should sparkle when dealings get under way.

Sutcliffe, who was a dab hand with a jackleg drill, actually spent seven years down a mine. Four of those were with Canada's Inco from 1990, blowing up rocks to win nickel sulphide in Thompson, Manitoba, some 500 miles north of Winnipeg.

He later became a successful mining analyst at brokers Williams de Bro" and then Evolution Securities, where he was a director of corporate finance, backing some of the most successful resources deals of the last couple of years.

Cash proceeds from the placing will be used to commence drilling and to initiate a feasibility study on the Juramento copper and silver deposit in Argentina and to develop its South American gold and silver properties at Rachaite and Sulcha in Peru and Trinidad in Argentina.

Sutcliffe, chairman and chief executive, is locked in for two years as are the rest of the board.

Other directors include David Norwood, an international chess Grand Master and chief executive of Aim-quoted intellectual property group IP2IPO.

hmmm - plenty of buying today but also alot of selling. the mms walked the price right up before people could start buying and i think this led to false hopes.

i can't imagine an institution would sell so early.
