US stocks ended higher tonight as crude prices fell after Hurricane Rita weakened to a mere Category 4 storm. The news raised hopes oil installations in the Gulf region may suffer less damage than initially anticipated.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 44.02 points to 10,422.05. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 4.14 points to 2,110.78 while the S&P500 was up 4.42 points at 1,214.62.
Crude futures were down 65 cents at $66.15 a barrel.
The Hang Seng ended the morning down 99.72 points at 15,080.23 while the Nikkei is closed for a public holdiday.
Oil eased in Asian trade with New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in November, at $66.16 a barrel, 35 cents lower than its close of $66.50 in the US.
