Funny you should start this, just as one of my hard disks appears to have given up the ghost. A 2.1mb Toshiba Tecra. Who are the best recovery people. I don't mind paying a small fee to see if it is recoverable with a list of files provided that could be recovered before I make a decision to recover. Any help gratefully appreciated.

I have heard that is Martini's problem as well.
Could you email me (using the new wonderful facility) and I will call you when I get your details.
Thanks

Hiya - you banned person you !!
I've just got a Powerleap processor upgrade for my machine - you know the one you sold me in 1972 ;)
Anyway - I can't get it to boot up. I'm doing this by EMail with them - so I thought it might be quicker to ask you here.
The Motherboard is a Gigabyte i440BX-8671 - set to run at 66MHz - and they've told me to change it to run at 100MHz - how do I do that - it's stripped down at the mo so easy to get in there - is it a switch or something ?

appears and states "AOL as caused an invalid page fault"
And then... I am kicked off the internet!

Have you got another ISP you can use as a test to see if it is AOL?

croc,
My pot is small, resources limited and trading expertise/experience insufficient
to go into level 2 at the moment.
Currently has PC running Window 98 and is looking at a basic PC with Windows XP
to install Oracle DB which was my profession. My IT skills needs updating
before hitting the job market next year ...
But wouldn't turn down a good offer in prep for using the Windows XP machine
into trading later on :-)

My laptop has developed a prob on the hard disc which scandisk won't fix. I can boot in safe mode. Dell have sent me instructions for fixing it; it largely sounds double dutch to me. Do I type EXACTLY as written (except for :)
I would ring dell again but it's usually such a pain getting through to them, so if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
please ensure that all data is backed up before proceeding with debug. Type
in the following commands at the a prompt after booting with a windows 98
boot disk.
debug
-F 200 L1000 0
-A CS:100
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80 ? "80 for hd 0,"81" for hd 1
xxxx:010C INT 13
xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110 ? Leave this line blank
-G
program terminated normally
For win98 you will need to run fdisk after debug to recreate the partitions
before formatting and reinstalling the operating system
