online stockbroking costs

paul30661 - 13 May 2006 11:33

Can people advise me please?
Selftrade are merging with Squaregain in July and from that date there will be a 25 annual fee levied on all accounts. The fee covers ISA and share accounts together and is waived at present for regular traders or if the portfolio is worth more than 25k - but this waiver will end in July.
With a flat rate trading cost of 12.50 irrespective of size and no inactivity charge, can people tell me whether the deal can be bettered elsewhere, either with a low/nil annual fee or lower dealing costs, (I only tend to trade a few times per quarter) ?
Many thanks

I trade through HSBC Invest Direct, No annual fee, and trading cost is only 11.95 ( Excluding Stamp Duty ).

Check out TDWaterhouse website for there costs 17.50 if you trade over the phone, and if u trade online the costs are as following 11.95 for regular uses,And 12.50 if your are not as frequent uses there is no added levey added to my knowledge for for sums less than 25k or any other ammount.

watch out for cheap dealing accounts paying you virtually no interest

eg. TD Waterhouse pay only 0.5% interest on cash whereas others pay 4%
if markets plunge it make a lot of difference

Barclays online, 10 deals in 3 months and its only 7.5 per trade, i don't worry to much about what interest they pay as i don't keep any money in my account for long as all my deals are paid & settled by debit card online and i can switch money from current account to savings account online in a matter of seconds.

I trade quite a lot (between 2 and 20 times a week) and use Fastrade (online of Charles Stanley). It's 19.95/quarter plus 9.95 per trade regardless of size. They always improve on the quotes, but can be very slow with limit orders (if needed). The telephone help is unfailingly excellent, however.
