How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Must be tough having weather like that Mr E lol

As for trading the game, i mainly trade on value during the game and based on an expectation of what the likely scenarios are going forward. I played a lot of cricket when a bit younger at all but the top level hence find it easy to break the game down into smaller segments which is what the two sides should be looking to do and then look at where the prices will go if certain events occur. I also keep an eye on the spreadbet markets as to a guide to what the market sees as a par score.

During most games there are points where one side (usually the batting side) will effectively become a free lay for 3 or 4 overs where there price wont shorten but on a wicket will blow out severely. I also look to trade the general overreaction to wickets

A free lay is always welcome. Definitely beats paying for one.

Morning All,

Well done Fundy on getting on board at 2.0 Completely missed this one and only picked it up this morning. Will have to wait for a better price later.

I'm expecting a weakened Eng side with the injuries and resting others for the forthcoming Pakistan tests.

Mr E where in the south are you?

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 11:03 - 10039 of 10502

Thanks Fundy.

Pommy near Toulouse.

Theres a joke int here somewhere TO LOSE ;)

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 11:26 - 10041 of 10502

I dont lose that often Pom :-) Just when I do it's normally a big one!

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 11:46 - 10042 of 10502

Greened up. Might soon another wicket soon at this rate so will get back on as and when.

Fundamentalist - 28 Jun 2006 11:46 - 10043 of 10502

Mr E

likewise greened on the match odds but also bought SL runs at 260 on the spreads and am letting that run

Fundamentalist - 28 Jun 2006 12:50 - 10044 of 10502

closed the spread at 306 when it started raining at mine - sometime sbeing in manchester has its benefits lol

Fundamentalist - 28 Jun 2006 12:52 - 10045 of 10502

eng big prob is if game isnt shortened harmison will be bowled out

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 12:53 - 10046 of 10502

Backed SL again. Might just let it go for the day and watch something else! REally cant see England winning it from here.

bakko - 28 Jun 2006 12:58 - 10047 of 10502

Nice to see you doing well Mr E

Backed SL at 1.93 after the 1st wicket :-))

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 13:02 - 10048 of 10502

I almost always do ok bakko but I am also honest with my bad trades / luck :-)

Not sure what effect the weather will have. I think it could favour SL as the DL method wil consider they are flying along and set England a high score.

Fundamentalist - 28 Jun 2006 13:09 - 10049 of 10502

DL will def favour SL currently, apart from the fact england have a better chance if they only have to chase for 30 overs not 50 say.

Bigger impact is on the spreads if say only 40 overs are bowled - that said it only looks like light showers

bakko - 28 Jun 2006 13:18 - 10050 of 10502

I really hope it's going to be just a brief delay.

If all trades get voided I'll jump out of my ground floor window and make sure I do a better job of it than the juve director!

Pommy - 28 Jun 2006 13:30 - 10051 of 10502

i notice that as he was italian there was no question he could have been pushed!!

Mr Euro - 28 Jun 2006 13:50 - 10052 of 10502

More interesting now! My new positions are not in such good shape!

Anyone hve the stats? Avg fist innings etc...

Fundamentalist - 28 Jun 2006 13:53 - 10053 of 10502

Mr E

If you mean at OT, in ODIs over history its 212, but not a very good guide as this is a better OT wicket than most and the powerplays have changed things in the batting sides favour

current spreads indicate 280 which makes 1.7 look a pretty big price to me

Also, SL have scored well with pace on the ball, when eng bat they will look to take the pace off it
