Harry - yes you did!

Its ten years since I last bought a brand new pc and that, and the 2 previous new ones were all from Dell. I guess nothing stays the same.

HARRYCAT - 27 Mar 2013 11:55 - 10076 of 11003

I have bought two Stoves cookers over the last 20 years (due to moving house) and I probably wouldn't buy that brand again as quality has definitely declined. As you say, companies are constantly trying to save a bob or two at the expense of quality (sometimes). Sony TV's & Bosch washing machines the same, imo.

hilary - 27 Mar 2013 12:13 - 10077 of 11003

Dunno what you boys are moaning about. I am never buying a keyboard off eBay again!

skinny - 27 Mar 2013 12:16 - 10078 of 11003

HARRYCAT - 03 Apr 2013 09:37 - 10088 of 11003

New operating systems are always a bit of a grind at first 'cos you are used to your usual system, but am looking forward, one day, to getting rid of my Vista machine, so probably W8 going to be my new toy. Watch out for the polish keys skinny!

skinny - 03 Apr 2013 10:31 - 10089 of 11003

Never together Hils, never together :-)

Harry, its the 'luddite' in me :-)

Only niggles so far, the day I ordered it, the spec omitted a 19-1 card reader - my fault for not checking more closely, and more annoying, it came with 3 power cables (only 2 needed) but 2 of them were European and thus useless.

Mega Bucks - 03 Apr 2013 10:58 - 10090 of 11003

Have been using the free AVG AntiVirus for a long time but was wondering is it the best free one,was wondering if Avast was a good option and is less power hungry ?? Can anyone help me on this one please ???

Haystack - 03 Apr 2013 11:28 - 10091 of 11003

If you don't have a touch screen, Win 8 is a pain. There is some method of downgrading it to look like more normal Windows.

Haystack - 03 Apr 2013 11:29 - 10092 of 11003

I now just use the free MS Security Essentials for Chris protection and the free firewall from Comodo.

tyketto - 03 Apr 2013 11:43 - 10093 of 11003

DO NOT DOWNLOAD COMODO>
It is very intrusive.
Once on your machine there is no way of removing it.
Avast is fine.

skinny - 03 Apr 2013 11:47 - 10094 of 11003

Actually after a couple of hours, W8 is growing on me (no touch screen).

I've been advised by a security expert friend to use the proprietary Defender that is integrated into W8 and can be downloaded as MS Essentials with W7.

Any free 'Office' recommendations?
