Referendum : to be in Europe or not to be ?, that is the question ! (REF)

required field - 03 Feb 2016 10:00

Thought I'd start a new thread as this is going to be a major talking point this year...have not made up my mind yet...(unlike bucksfizz)....but thinking of voting for an exit as Europe is not doing Britain any good at all it seems....

How am I wrong exactly, Dilbert? Are you suggesting that my comment was factually inaccurate?

And, fwiw, I think we've all seen what happens in the UK when they try to carry out infrastructure improvements themselves, vis-a-vis the Royal Liverpool Hospital down the road from Alder Hey which tried to fund its new extension via a Carillion PFI and now needs new funding to finish the job.

cynic - 08 Jan 2019 12:47 - 11315 of 12628

how was the high speed rail network in spain funded?
i know it has nearly bankrupted the country

iturama - 08 Jan 2019 13:38 - 11316 of 12628

Hilary is partially correct. The new hospital was built in Springfield Park which was, as I remember, a nice mature park and lake adjacent to the old hospital. The old hospital is being demolished and the park reinstated. However, the EIB only supplied, on a competitive tender basis, about 30% of the financing, so it hardly financed or built the hospital. Nor could it have done. It has enough of a problem organizing itself.

Stan - 08 Jan 2019 16:32 - 11317 of 12628

So no deal is off as far as these two are concerned https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46795406

When will someone with authority in this useless government make their mind up 😃

cynic - 08 Jan 2019 16:37 - 11318 of 12628

good job JC has no authority then for he can never ever make up his mind about anything at all

2517GEORGE - 08 Jan 2019 16:39 - 11319 of 12628

Yes it would be so straightforward if they adhered to democracy wouldn't it Stan?

Fred1new - 08 Jan 2019 16:43 - 11320 of 12628

democracy
[dɪ'mɒkrəsi]
■ noun (plural democracies) a form of government in which the people have a voice in the exercise of power, typically through elected representatives. ▶a state governed in such a way. ▶control of a group by the majority of its members.

If the country were to stay in the EU without a way out then what point is keeping the monarchy?

2517GEORGE - 08 Jan 2019 17:46 - 11322 of 12628

Re post 11320
Democracy is about much more than elections. By “democracy” we mean the existence of properly functioning institutions and the rule of law to protect people from all forms of discrimination and uphold their human rights – people having a say in the decisions that affect them through accountable, participative, representative and transparent political systems. Progress in this area can sometimes come quickly, even unexpectedly; but it is more often the work of decades.

Cerise Noire Girl - 08 Jan 2019 17:46 - 11323 of 12628

Why don't you ask that question of Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden?

Martini - 08 Jan 2019 17:51 - 11324 of 12628

Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden all seem to need one so why not us?

But the real reason is we could end up with President Blair or Major or Livingstone or Hammond or ...... so lets stick with what we have now, it's good for the tourist trade.

Martini - 08 Jan 2019 17:52 - 11325 of 12628

Ditto Hils

Fred1new - 08 Jan 2019 18:00 - 11326 of 12628

"By “democracy” we mean "

Who are the WE?

=--=-=-=-=

"so lets stick with what we have now, it's good for the tourist trade."

Membership of the EU.

You doubt that you will be able to escape from, even if you are only a second class member.
-=-=-=

Martini - 08 Jan 2019 18:41 - 11327 of 12628

Klingon again - Stan will know what it is meant to mean.

Dil - 08 Jan 2019 18:46 - 11328 of 12628

Yes Hils you were factually wrong. The EIB certainly didn't build the hospital and unlike you suggested it apparently only funded 30% of the reconstruction. Probably true for the other 18 you mention too.

Wonder how many we could have built over the years with the 8 billion a year we've been subsidising the EU.

Dil - 08 Jan 2019 18:51 - 11329 of 12628

And one more sheep shagger comment and I'm ringing up Anna Sourpuss in her bunker to ask for advice.

Gets called a Nazi and blames the far right. It was labours loony left you stupid cow.

Dil - 08 Jan 2019 18:53 - 11330 of 12628

M , buy Tadpole ?

:-)

Cerise Noire Girl - 08 Jan 2019 19:09 - 11331 of 12628

Where exactly did I suggest that the EIB did build either Alder Hey or the Royal Liverpool extension, Dilbert? On Alder Hey (11304), I merely said they'd received EIB funding. And on Royal Liverpool (11314), I merely stated that it was a Carillion PFI project gone wrong.

It was your stooge who suggested otherwise, and came up with some irrelevant drivel. Seriously, you're increasingly sounding like you're running scared...

Cerise Noire Girl - 08 Jan 2019 19:10 - 11332 of 12628

Another defeat in the Commons for Maggie Dismay just now. This is getting embarrassing...

Mayday, Mayday! Or should that be m'aider, m'aider?

:o)

Fred1new - 08 Jan 2019 19:33 - 11333 of 12628

Cherie,

Hold on, I'm coming.

Perhaps, I shouldn't have written that!
