How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

You might be right actually Fundy, having looked at the player bios :-)

Fundamentalist - 14 Feb 2005 20:49 - 1152 of 10502

Kayak

i am right - im a gooner through and through - the starting 11 is 1 german, 1 spaniard, 1 cameroon, 1 ivory coast, 1 brazilian, 1 dutchman and 5 frenchman!!!!

they might all be foreign - but bloody impressive tonight! - to me they look a different side with Edu in the team - if only they had a keeper and a defense...............

FIFA are bringing in some sort of rule , 4 out of 16 have to be home nationality initially I think.

That'll b*gger Cardiff City's chances when we qualify for the European Cup :-)

Scripophilist - 14 Feb 2005 21:40 - 1154 of 10502

Fundy, Your boys are doing a great job of ruining Palace's goal difference, we want six, we want six.

Fundamentalist - 14 Feb 2005 21:42 - 1155 of 10502

6 scrip - i was hoping for 7 or 8

Scripophilist - 14 Feb 2005 21:56 - 1156 of 10502

I was hoping for around 10 then Southampton wouldn't be far behind Palace's goal difference.

Looks like last month was a good month for football on Betfair, Just short of 300m in matched bets. Horse racing dipped a bit at 464m (I guess the time of year?). One thing stood out and that was the Cricket at 75m much higher than I have seen for a long time. American football is now getting bigger as well helped by the superbowl at 20m, Tennis a creditable 152m. Total of matched bets was 1.104bn

bakko - 15 Feb 2005 10:00 - 1158 of 10502

Scrip,

1.1bn, Unbelievable figures!!

Do you know how it compares with the High St bookies monthly turnover?

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 12:13 - 1159 of 10502

WMH are showing turnover of around 6b for last year not sure how either calculate turnover though.

bakko - 15 Feb 2005 13:03 - 1160 of 10502

Thanks Scrip for figures.

With such phenomimal turnover and set to increase exponentially and with minimal overheads there must be pangs of jealousy from the High St bookies.

Betfair, a possible takeover target in the future??

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 16:24 - 1161 of 10502

Just bagged a chunk of money on 16:20 at Folkstone. Favourite just suddenly drifted a large amount just before the off. Anybody else on the race?

Blondie - 15 Feb 2005 17:12 - 1162 of 10502

Hi Harlosh,

I know i sound over eager to make money quickly and i am, but i also know that is not the way to go about it as it could all go very wrong, that is why i have been paper trading for so long (2yrs) I have made a lot of money on paper but when it comes to the real thing it's a different story!! I was just wondering on average what people made weekly on betfair so that if ever something went wrong (at work for example) would i be able to make 150ish weekly on betfair just to tide me over? Say if i had a pot of around 300

What d'ya think?

Harlosh - 15 Feb 2005 17:22 - 1163 of 10502

Blondie,

With a pot of 300, absolutely not. As I said above, money management is just as important on Betfair as it is on the financials. It is feasible to do so with 300 but with one or two losses you could be wiped out.

I promise you if you try to make money too quickly, you will overtrade and lose it all.

chartist2004 - 15 Feb 2005 17:54 - 1164 of 10502

The Europe XI v World XI,tonight Correct Score - Any Unquoted odds 2.66 / 2.74 are they v good at scoring? Or have I missed somthing?

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 18:02 - 1165 of 10502

You missed something. Have a look again at the event and re-appraise. I'm not trading it but will probably watch it. Lay 0-0 is probably the best bet!!

chartist2004 - 15 Feb 2005 18:45 - 1166 of 10502

Thanks Scrip will try that (not) ;

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 21:29 - 1167 of 10502

ROFL, Just been laying no next goal on this match for fun. Not serious money but 4-3 now or 700%, I can't believe people are trying to actually place odds on this match.

Scripophilist - 15 Feb 2005 21:35 - 1168 of 10502

Now 5-3 I sense a 5-5 draw on the cards!

chartist2004 - 16 Feb 2005 00:30 - 1169 of 10502

Did anyone back the Any Unquoted @ 2.66 then layed @ 1.04 (these were the actual odds) just before the 4th goal to green up for 147% profit, no? that makes two of us, I was only an observer!! more's the pitty...

Scripophilist - 16 Feb 2005 09:40 - 1170 of 10502

Weird stuff and these sort of matches will not be a stable diet ever, I think. Still can't believe people were trying to make a market on this game.
