How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Had a good day on the FTSE today - but just gave it all back on the football.

Arsenal match

A goal for Arsenal would see them jump to 1.10ish. Be careful with the draw a 1-0 Arsenal lead will see the draw odds double but if it stays 1-0 the draw will go in a retrograde pattern (I.e. chances of a draw improve and the price comes in).

Morning all

I would be careful lumping on arsenal until the team is announced - may be a bit different to normal with champions league on wednesday

no trading for me - off to haydock as a gambler (though have made a few quid trading the pricewise horses from v early this am)

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 12:30 - 1231 of 10502

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Scrip for match info.

Fundy, Enjoy Haydock and hope you do well!

Having seen the Arsenal teamsheet, a weakened team especially at the back so I'm very tempted to lay off initially and change tack later.

Scripophilist - 19 Feb 2005 12:30 - 1232 of 10502

Hmm, Seems everybody is lumping on Arsenal anyhow. Thanks to the price move, I am all green even before the kick off!

Scripophilist - 19 Feb 2005 12:52 - 1233 of 10502

I should add also (though it is obvious now the match is underway) that if the score is 0-0, the price on Arsenal will drift and that of Sheff Utd will come in. The crossover point for the price on Sheff Utd is around 50 mins. So if Sheff Utd hold Arsenal their price will continue to come in till that point and then drift out as the draw gets more ever more likely.

Scripophilist - 19 Feb 2005 13:13 - 1234 of 10502

Interesting match so far especially with the Arsenal sending off!!

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 13:28 - 1235 of 10502

This game is looking better and better for me!

Layed off before kick off and looking to green up or even better during second half. Sheff U should at least be 1 up by now!!

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 13:56 - 1236 of 10502

Greened up so time for a late lunch.

Harlosh - 19 Feb 2005 14:13 - 1237 of 10502

Well done bakko.

Scripophilist - 19 Feb 2005 14:29 - 1238 of 10502

It's been a good match, Full of incident. But it seems that the way to beat Arsenal is to kick the players off the park. Not sure if thats in the spirit of things.

Wasted a little bit of money towards the end but a good result on the match.

cunningham - 19 Feb 2005 14:31 - 1239 of 10502

Got to the match with 7 mins left. Backed the draw at this point and greened up after the penalty. Pure luck but best payout to date.

Harlosh - 19 Feb 2005 14:36 - 1240 of 10502

Nicely done Cunningham.

Scrip, are you on the races today? I always find Saturdays difficult.

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 14:36 - 1241 of 10502

Thanks Harlosh

Just as well I greened up as the game got quite interesting towards the end. I hope those backing Arsenal greened up when they scored.

Yet again a goal is scored during the dying moments!! I noticed that with less than 5mins to end the odds on Arsenal to win were still quite generous at 1.10/1.11. Probably due to 10 men Ars. A lot of money still being matched at that point. Some burnt fingers around but hopefully none on this thread.

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 14:39 - 1242 of 10502

Cunningham, Well done too.

Scripophilist - 19 Feb 2005 14:44 - 1243 of 10502

"Scrip, are you on the races today? I always find Saturdays difficult."

I tend not to do Saturdays. I am around this afternoon though testing some software. No real opinions on todays racing yet but maybe there is more "random" money over the weekend?

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 17:08 - 1244 of 10502

For Everton v ManU game later there is good value for backing ManU @ 1.8/1.81.
Odds have shortened considerably since yesterday 1.97/1.98.

Everton strikers, Beattie and Cahill are both suspended. Other strikers McFadden and Ferguson both carrying slight injuries although in squad.

Rooney set to play from start.

Set to be a potentially explosive game.

Afternoon all

bakko - 19 Feb 2005 19:30 - 1246 of 10502

An impeccable performance from the Reds. Nice profit too.

An excellent day for me so will quit whilst well ahead. Using some of today's gains to take the wife out now.

Hope everyone else has done well too.

Harlosh - 20 Feb 2005 16:28 - 1247 of 10502

Just got in. There's a turn up. Chelsea down 1-0. Not on the match yet.
