New bulletinboard now live.

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 02 Jul 2005 01:46

Hello,

As you can see, we have put the new bulletin boards live.

The migration went smoothly, though it look at little longer than I expected it to!

If you notice any problems on the boards, please post below.

I have the impression that the site is slower than previously .I have an 8M connection and previously it was loaded as I clicked the thread. Perhaps it is only my connection.

Digger,

What area of the site?

J.

Digger - 04 Jul 2005 20:10 - 132 of 388

It is just a general impression ,but it may be totally this end and nothing to do with the site .Will check with Process Explorer and monitor tomorrow.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but I'm not taking easily to this new format.

The smaller print (or is it just a font change) combined with the squarer buttons looks fussier, harder to read, and somehow less 'open and friendly'.

The colourful little icons are simply unnecessary, and draw the eye away from the main point of interest, which is the poster's name. I think they ought to be relegated to the Profile page for each poster, accessed by clicking on the poster's name, as before. (Do the icons slow down page-scrolling, btw?)

Have to say I also liked the (old) 'Recent Posts' button, rather than this page-centred format. (ie : with the new Page numbers, 1,2,3,4 etc... as the only way, as far as I can see, of jumping immediately to recent posts.)

Jeez, this is the sort of design that (rather frighteningly) I can imagine that I might have come up with as a 'good idea' before I realised the error of my ways.

I leave it at that. End of sermon.

Re posts #46 & #52 - thanks for the reply JT. Obviously I don't know what the position is in this case but my (programming) experience is that sometimes things like column order may appear to be major changes but in fact are fairly easy to effect, albeit with some fiddly col-width reformatting. I appreciate it's not of immediate concern though.

Re post maggot's post #51, I agree with him that it's useful to have the last post on a page repeated as the first one on the next. Yes, I know the numbers follow in sequence, but that's not how users read. We don't keep a mental note of the number of the post we've just read; we know the content of the post we've just read and like to glance at it as a point of reference, of navigation.

Here's a silly one - I can't post .29!

edit: now when I try to edit what comes out as .29, even the edit box is telling me I typed .29 - but I didn't. It was supposed to be (dollar sign) 12.29.

StonyB,

Thnks for the feedback - I shall pass it onto JT.

Chocolat,

Interesting - is this just happening with dollar signs? I will let JT know,

chocolat/Ian - I mentioned this to J yesterday - I think he's working on it.

Kyoto,

Thanks I will get him to update here when he has looked at it,

chocolat - might be stating the obvious - but I've been putting a space between the dollar and the number in the last couple of days - works.

seawallwalker - 05 Jul 2005 07:48 - 140 of 388

Hi all.

Unless I am missing a control, I wonder if you could include a "go to end" button as before please.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 05 Jul 2005 07:50 - 141 of 388

seawallwalker,

You will see at the bottom of every thread list towards the right hand side, a series of numbers - if you click on the last number this will take you to the end of the trhead,

StonyB - have to agree with you on the subject of the icons. Their colourful nature and large size and proximity relative to the poster's name seems to serve to detract attention away from it - and the post below. I thought I'd get used to it (subconsciously start editing them out visually) after a few days, but it isn't happening. I don't think I'll ever like them.

Clickable functionality ought to be sized, spaced and visually presented relative to frequency of use. Since the icon options are probably not going to be used so much I think they should be more discrete. Ironically the edit button, which surely would be more frequently used, is much more visually understated. The page navigation buttons are smaller than the profile icons and quite close together, yet these are really important. I find myself having to 'aim' my mouse more carefully than I did before.

A good example of icons that work are the ones in the MoneyAM Terminal. Relatively small, colour consistent (so it doesn't feel like a child's paintbox), understated and dare I say, a bit classier?

I hate saying all this because having spent a lot of my life working in and studying software development, with heavy doses of 'interface functionality engineering', I know you usually don't please most of the people most of the time, and coming up with an interface you like and having people tell you it doesn't work for them is a bit depressing. Actually, software development is an increasingly thankless task which is why I got out of it - and why I really sympathise with what the MoneyAM team are going through.

But I still find the new design vaguely irritating. Sorry folks!

Thanks for the feedback I will pass it onto JT,
